MALE 60, SAINT XAVIER 58

In a championship game that delivered intensity until the final horn, No. 9 Male held off a furious late charge by top-ranked Saint Xavier to secure a 60–58 victory Monday night, claiming the Bulldogs’ fourth all-time King of the Bluegrass championship and their first title since 2007.

Male (9-1) controlled the game early, building a sizable lead behind disciplined defense and efficient scoring, then withstood Saint Xavier’s late push as the Tigers (7-2) made it a one-possession game in the final seconds. The Bulldogs answered every challenge just enough to close out the win and celebrate on the Fairdale floor.

Jordan Mitchell was the centerpiece of the championship effort, earning Bob White Most Valuable Player honors after scoring a game-high 26 points on 10-of-17 shooting. Mitchell added five rebounds and delivered repeatedly in key moments, including late baskets and free throws that helped Male maintain its narrow edge down the stretch.

Saint Xavier was led by an outstanding performance from Jeremiah Jackson, who finished with 24 points and nine rebounds while carrying much of the offensive load during the Tigers’ second-half rally. Jackson’s aggressiveness and shot-making fueled Saint Xavier’s comeback attempt and kept pressure on Male until the final possession.

Male’s supporting cast played a crucial role throughout the tournament and in the title game. Jayme Clark earned All-Tournament honors after contributing four points and a team-high eight rebounds in the championship, consistently impacting the game on the defensive end. Trey Hillerich, also named to the All-Tournament Team, added 10 points, six rebounds, and multiple timely plays on both ends, including critical minutes late as Male protected its lead.

Saint Xavier placed three players on the KOB All-Tournament Team. In addition to Jackson’s standout performance, Josh Lindsay earned honors after scoring six points with key rebounds and interior plays throughout the tournament, while Chief Cameron was recognized for his physical presence, pulling down eight rebounds and anchoring the Tigers in the paint during the championship game.

With the victory, Male moved into sole possession of second place on the all-time King of the Bluegrass championship list with four titles. The win also marked the Bulldogs’ 54th all-time victory in the prestigious tournament, keeping them third all-time in total wins.

The championship run was as impressive as any in recent memory. On their way to the title, the Bulldogs defeated Kentucky’s preseason No. 3 Covington Catholic, preseason No. 2 Frederick Douglass, and capped the week by knocking off preseason No. 1 Saint Xavier in the championship game.

Nearly two decades after their last KOB championship, Male’s return to the top was sealed by resilience, balance, and timely execution — a championship earned by surviving the best and finishing the job when it mattered most.

CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW — 44th ANNUAL GARDNER LAW KING OF THE BLUEGRASS

The final night of the King of the Bluegrass arrives with a championship matchup that feels both historic and perfectly balanced. When the ball goes up Monday night, #9 Male and #1 Saint Xavier will meet with the tournament crown on the line — two unbeaten teams in tournament play, two programs steeped in tradition, and one trophy waiting to be lifted.

Both teams have taken different roads to this point, but each has proven worthy of playing on the final night.

THE ROAD TO THE TITLE GAME

Saint Xavier (7-1) has looked every bit the defending champion throughout the weekend. The Tigers opened the tournament with a disciplined 62–54 win over Warren Central, followed by a methodical 57–47 victory against North Oldham. In the semifinals, Saint Xavier passed its toughest test, turning back Madison Central 70–59 in a game that demanded poise, rebounding, and execution down the stretch. The Tigers have thrived by controlling tempo, spacing the floor, and locking in defensively when it matters most.

Male (8-1) has taken a more physical path to the championship. The Bulldogs opened with a dominant 71–46 win over Greeneville, then knocked off Covington Catholic 77–69 in a high-energy quarterfinal. In the semifinals, Male survived a tense, grind-it-out battle with Frederick Douglass, escaping with a 62–59 victory that showcased toughness, rebounding, and composure in the closing moments.

UNBEATEN AGAINST THE BLUEGRASS

Adding to the intrigue, neither team has lost to an in-state opponent this season. Male’s lone defeat came against Pike (Indianapolis), Indiana, while Saint Xavier’s only loss was to national powerhouse Spire Academy (Geneva), Ohio. Against Kentucky competition, both teams have been flawless — further underscoring just how elite this championship matchup is and how difficult it has been for anyone inside the state’s borders to slow either program down.

A TRUE CHAMPIONSHIP TOSS-UP

Statistically, this championship matchup is as close as any in recent tournament memory. According to the official team matchup report, scoring and defense are essentially even. Male holds advantages in productivity, strength, aggressiveness, ball handling, and intangibles, while Saint Xavier counters with edges in shooting range, concentration, alertness, and consistency. When all factors are weighed, the overall edge is listed as even, underscoring just how thin the margin is between the two finalists

Saint Xavier’s success has come from precision — valuing possessions, winning the rebounding battle at key moments, and forcing opponents to execute late in the shot clock. Male has thrived on imposing its will — attacking downhill, winning physical battles, and turning effort plays into momentum-shifting sequences.

HISTORY ON THE LINE

Beyond the matchup itself, history hangs over the court Monday night.

Saint Xavier is chasing something rare: a second straight King of the Bluegrass championship. A win would make the Tigers the first back-to-back champions since the 2011–12 era and cement their place as a modern tournament power. In their lone previous championship appearance, the Tigers claimed the title — giving them a spotless 1–0 record in KOB finals.

Male is playing for legacy. The Bulldogs are making their fifth championship appearance, owning a 3–1 record in title games with championships in 1991, 2001, and 2007. A victory Monday night would deliver Male its fourth all-time King of the Bluegrass title, tying host Fairdale for the second-most championships in tournament history.

WHAT TO EXPECT TONIGHT

Expect a championship decided by details. Possessions will matter. Free throws will matter. One defensive stand, one loose ball, or one timely basket could swing the outcome. Saint Xavier will look to stretch the floor, stay composed, and defend with discipline for all 32 minutes. Male will aim to make the game physical, pressure the ball, and turn effort into advantage.

Two undefeated tournament teams. Two programs unbeaten against Kentucky competition. One trophy.

By the end of the night, the 44th Annual King of the Bluegrass will have its champion — either a team making history by repeating, or one adding another banner to an already storied legacy.

MALE 62, FREDERICK DOUGLASS 59

No. 9 Male (7-1) is headed back to the King of the Bluegrass championship game for the first time in nearly two decades after holding off No. 2 Frederick Douglass (5-1), 62–59, in a hard-fought semifinal Sunday afternoon.

The Bulldogs leaned on poise, toughness, and timely execution to survive repeated late pushes from the Broncos, earning their first KOB finals appearance since 2007 and the fifth championship berth in program history.

Jordan Mitchell turned in a championship-level performance to lead Male, finishing with 27 points and 10 rebounds to earn Central Bank Player of the Game honors. Mitchell scored in the paint, knocked down jumpers when needed, and controlled the glass down the stretch, delivering several key defensive rebounds and late free throws to keep Douglass at bay.

Frederick Douglass was powered by DeMarcus Surratt, who poured in 27 points of his own. Surratt ignited multiple comeback attempts with aggressive drives and second-chance baskets, helping the Broncos claw back into the game time and again.

The contest was tight throughout, featuring 10 lead changes and seven ties, with neither team able to gain lasting separation. Douglass briefly pulled even early in the fourth quarter, but Male responded with timely baskets from Mitchell and Cornellius Barnett to regain control. In the final minute, the Bulldogs’ defense forced tough shots and limited second chances, sealing the victory.

Male now stands one victory away from another KOB title. The Bulldogs enter the championship game with a 3-1 all-time record in KOB finals, their most recent championship coming in 2007. Frederick Douglass fell just short of a reaching the KOB finals for the second straight year.

Now, Male will look to finish the job and add another championship chapter to its King of the Bluegrass legacy as they take on 7th region rival Saint Xavier at 7:30pm on Monday. Frederick Douglass will play Madison Central in the 3rd Place Final at 6:00pm on Monday.

SAINT XAVIER 70, MADISON CENTRAL 59

Top-ranked Saint Xavier continued its impressive run through the Gardner Law King of the Bluegrass on Sunday night, pulling away in the middle quarters to secure a 70–59 victory over No. 5 Madison Central and advance to the championship game for the second straight season.

Saint Xavier (6-1) set the tone early and never relinquished control, building a double-digit cushion by halftime and responding to every Madison Central push after the break. The Tigers outscored the Indians 21–8 in the opening quarter and carried a 36–22 lead into the locker room, fueled by defensive pressure and efficient perimeter shooting.

Junior guard Jordan Jackson was named Central Bank Player of the Game after delivering a poised all-around performance, finishing with 17 points while consistently answering momentum swings with timely baskets and trips to the foul line. Jackson was especially effective during a decisive third quarter, when Saint Xavier pushed the margin to as many as 20 points and seized firm control of the contest.

Saint Xavier received strong complementary scoring throughout the lineup. Josh Lindsay added 17 points of his own, knocking down four three-pointers and providing a steady scoring punch on the perimeter, while Bryce Johnson chipped in 10 points, hitting timely shots that helped maintain momentum whenever Madison Central threatened.

Madison Central (7-1) showed resilience throughout, led by Jake Feldhaus, who poured in a game-high 18 points and battled inside to keep the Indians within reach. Madison Central cut the deficit to single digits late in the fourth quarter, but Saint Xavier calmly closed the door at the free-throw line and with key finishes in transition down the stretch.

The Tigers knocked down shots from the perimeter at a high clip and turned defensive pressure into points, converting Madison Central turnovers into consistent scoring opportunities that prevented any sustained comeback attempt.

With the victory, Saint Xavier has now won seven straight games in King of the Bluegrass play and advanced to its second-ever KOB championship game. The Tigers will now look to make history, aiming to become the first program to repeat as KOB champions since Christ Presbyterian accomplished the feat in 2011–12.

Saint Xavier will play the winner of Frederick Douglass vs. Male in the Championship at 7:30pm on Monday. Madison Central will play in the 3rd Place Final against the loser of Frederick Douglass vs. Male at 6:00pm on Monday.

Second ranked Frederick Douglass (5-0) continued its strong run at the Gardner Law King of the Bluegrass on Saturday night, pulling away late to defeat No. 6 North Laurel (6-2) 74–64 and advance to its second straight tournament semifinal.

The Broncos set the tone early and never trailed, building a steady cushion behind efficient shooting and relentless defensive pressure. Frederick Douglass was sharp offensively throughout the night, using balanced scoring and ball movement to keep the Jaguars from gaining sustained momentum.

Senior guard Tate Robinson led the way for the Broncos, earning Central Bank Player of the Game honors with 18 points. Robinson connected on five three-pointers and delivered several momentum-shifting baskets, particularly during a decisive second-quarter stretch that helped Frederick Douglass push its lead into double figures.

North Laurel was fueled by an outstanding performance from Reece Davidson, who poured in a game-high 32 points. Davidson scored in a variety of ways and repeatedly kept the Jaguars within reach, but Frederick Douglass consistently responded with timely shots and key defensive stops.

The Broncos carried a 38–29 lead into halftime and continued to apply pressure in the third quarter, extending the margin to as many as 17 points. North Laurel made a late push in the fourth, trimming the deficit, but Frederick Douglass closed the door with poise at the free-throw line and strong finishes in transition to secure the win.

SAINT XAVIER 57, NORTH OLDHAM 47

Top-ranked Saint Xavier leaned on its defense, composure, and late execution to pull away from a stubborn North Oldham squad, earning a 57–47 victory Saturday night in the quarterfinals of the 2025 Gardner Law King of the Bluegrass.

The win marked Saint Xavier’s sixth straight KOB victory and sent the Tigers to the semifinals for the second consecutive season.

North Oldham came out with confidence and energy, racing to an 18–9 lead after the opening quarter behind crisp ball movement and perimeter shooting. Tommy Gregg fueled the early surge, knocking down multiple threes as the Mustangs seized control and put the Tigers on their heels.

Saint Xavier gradually steadied itself in the second quarter, chipping away at the deficit with defensive stops and second-chance opportunities. A late three just before halftime swung momentum, allowing the Tigers to slip into the break with a narrow 28–27 lead after trailing by as many as 13 points.

The third quarter belonged to Saint Xavier. The Tigers tightened defensively, limited North Oldham’s clean looks, and turned rebounds into transition chances. Jeremiah Jackson was at the center of the surge, finishing through contact and controlling the glass as Saint Xavier built a nine-point cushion entering the fourth.

North Oldham made one final push early in the final period, closing within four, but the Tigers answered every challenge. Jackson dominated the closing minutes, scoring inside, drawing fouls, and converting at the free-throw line to seal the outcome. Saint Xavier was perfect at the line in the final frame, shutting the door on any comeback hopes.

Jeremiah Jackson earned Central Bank Player of the Game honors after posting 17 points and 10 rebounds, delivering a physical and poised performance when it mattered most. Saint Xavier’s defense set the tone throughout, forcing turnovers and controlling the tempo in the second half.

Tommy Gregg led North Oldham with 15 points, providing steady offense throughout the night, but after a strong opening quarter the Mustangs struggled to maintain their rhythm as Saint Xavier’s pressure mounted.

MADISON CENTRAL 82, FAIRDALE 76 (OT)

Madison Central had to survive every second of it — and then some.

No. 5 Madison Central (7-0) outlasted a fearless host Fairdale (3-3) in a heart-pounding overtime thriller, escaping with an 82-76 victory Saturday evening to punch its ticket to the semifinals of the Gardner Law King of the Bluegrass for the first time since 2012.

From the opening tip, Fairdale fed off the home crowd’s energy. Kamari Roberts put on an unforgettable performance, attacking the rim and knocking down shots from deep as the Bulldogs stormed to an early lead. Fairdale led 31-22 at halftime, and every possession felt like it carried postseason weight.

Madison Central answered with a surge that flipped the game on its head. Behind the physical presence of Jake Feldhaus, the Indians unleashed a blistering run in the third quarter, turning a deficit into momentum and suddenly seizing control. The pace intensified, bodies hit the floor, and the gym buzzed as the lead swung back and forth.

Just when it appeared Madison Central might escape in regulation, Roberts delivered the moment of the night — burying a clutch three-pointer with 8.6 seconds remaining in the game to tie the game at 66 and send the contest into overtime. The eruption inside Fairdale High School felt more like March than December.

In the extra period, Madison Central steadied itself as they jumped ahead 72-66 early. Feldhaus dominated the paint, muscling in key baskets and cleaning the glass, while the Indians calmly knocked down free throws to hold off every Fairdale charge. Feldhaus finished with 28 points and 10 rebounds, earning Central Bank Player of the Game honors in a performance that defined toughness and poise.

Roberts’ game-high 39 points kept the Bulldogs charging until the final horn, but Madison Central’s composure in overtime proved decisive.

Madison Central advances to play the winner of North Oldham vs. Saint Xavier at 7:30pm Sunday in the semifinals. Fairdale will play the loser of North Oldham vs. Saint Xavier at 6:00pm Sunday in the 5th Place semifinals.

MALE 77, COVINGTON CATHOLIC 69

Ninth ranked Male (6-1) delivered its most composed stretch of the night when it mattered most, dominating the final two minutes to pull away from No. 3 Covington Catholic (5-1) for a 77–69 victory Saturday afternoon at Fairdale High School in the Gardner Law King of the Bluegrass quarterfinals.

Locked in a tense, back-and-forth battle throughout the second half, Male turned a 67–66 edge into an eight-point win with a decisive closing run built on defense, rebounding, and poise. The Bulldogs scored on four of their final five possessions, repeatedly capitalizing on second-chance opportunities and Covington Catholic turnovers to seize full control in the closing moments.

Jordan Mitchell was the catalyst, earning Central Bank Player of the Game honors after posting 29 points, eight rebounds, and five assists. Mitchell delivered in every facet down the stretch—knocking down timely jumpers, securing critical defensive rebounds, and setting up teammates as Male closed the game with a 10–3 surge over the final 1:17.

Covington Catholic leaned heavily on Athens McGillis, who produced a game-high 35 points and kept the Colonels within striking distance with a series of tough finishes and trips to the foul line. McGillis tied the game at 60 with 5:27 remaining and later gave Covington Catholic a brief lead at 67–64 with just over three minutes to play. However, the Colonels went cold late, managing only two free throws in the final 90 seconds as Male’s pressure defense took over.

The Bulldogs’ balance proved decisive. Trey Hillerich controlled the glass with 11 rebounds, while Jaymes Clark and Keefe Braziel provided steady interior scoring and defensive toughness. Male out-rebounded Covington Catholic 48–34 overall and converted crucial second-chance points during its closing push.

After trailing by as many as 11 earlier in the contest, Male’s composure never wavered. A late putback by Mitchell and a pair of transition finishes off Colonels turnovers sealed the outcome and sent the Bulldogs into the semifinals for the first time since 2021.

Male will play the winner of Frederick Douglass vs. North Laurel at 9:00pm on Sunday in the semifinals. Covington Catholic will play the loser of Frederick Douglass vs. North Laurel at 4:30pm Sunday in the 5th Place semifinals.

NORTH LAUREL 67, LYON COUNTY 31

North Laurel (6-1) left little doubt Friday night, as the No. 6 Jaguars delivered a commanding 67-31 victory over No. 23 Lyon County (3-2) in Gardner Law King of the Bluegrass action at Fairdale High School

The Jaguars set the tone early with relentless defensive pressure, forcing turnovers and turning them into easy offense. North Laurel converted 15 Lyon County miscues into 16 points, a statistic that told much of the story in a game that quickly tilted out of reach. After building a 23-13 lead at the end of the first quarter, North Laurel steadily widened the margin behind efficient shooting and crisp ball movement.

Reece Davidson was the catalyst throughout, earning Central Bank Player of the Game honors with a game-high 22 points. Davidson scored from all three levels and helped spark several decisive runs, including a surge late in the second quarter that pushed the Jaguars to a 36-19 halftime advantage. North Laurel knocked down 12 three-pointers in the contest and shot better than 46 percent from the field, while holding Lyon County under 23 percent shooting overall.

The Jaguars put the game away in the third quarter, opening the half with a flurry that extended the lead past 20. A 14-2 run midway through the period highlighted North Laurel’s depth and defensive intensity, as Lyon County struggled to generate clean looks or second-chance opportunities.

Lyon County was led by Nolan Coffman, who scored nine points and battled on the glass, but the Lyons were unable to find an offensive rhythm against North Laurel’s pressure. Lyon County managed just three points in the fourth quarter as the Jaguars emptied the bench and cruised to the finish.

With the dominant win, North Laurel advances to the quarterfinals where they will play Frederick Douglass at 9:00pm Saturday. Lyon County will play Butler in the consolation bracket at 9:00pm Saturday.

FREDERICK DOUGLASS 61, BUTLER 58

In a game that delivered nonstop tension until the final horn, No. 24 Butler (5-1) saw the game slip away in heartbreaking fashion Friday night, falling 61–58 to No. 2 Frederick Douglass (4-0) in a gripping King of the Bluegrass showdown at Fairdale High School.

Butler played with confidence throughout, taking a 39–36 lead into halftime and later pushing the advantage to 52–49 heading into the fourth quarter. The Bears controlled tempo for much of the night and repeatedly answered Frederick Douglass’ runs, setting the stage for a dramatic finish.

That finish belonged to the Broncos.

With just over a minute remaining and Butler clinging to a one-point edge, DeMarcus Surratt stepped to the line and calmly knocked down two free throws to tie the game at 58–58. On the very next possession, Surratt attacked the lane and converted the go-ahead basket, giving Frederick Douglass its first lead of the closing stretch.

Butler had multiple chances to respond, but the Broncos’ defense held firm. Frederick Douglass then sealed the outcome at the free-throw line in the final seconds, extending the margin to 61–58 and forcing Butler into a last-second attempt to send the game to overtime.

The No. 3-ranked Colonels (5-0) set the tone early, racing out to a 29-15 lead after one quarter behind sharp ball movement and torrid perimeter shooting. The Colonels also controlled the glass and capitalized on Lee turnovers, turning defensive pressure into consistent transition opportunities.

Lee (7-3) was led by Dylan Anderson with 10 points, but the Generals struggled to keep pace against Covington Catholic’s depth and efficiency, shooting just 30.9 percent for the game. The Generals remain winless all-time in KOB action with their 7th straight defeat.

With the decisive win, the Colonels advance to the quarterfinals, where they will face Male at 4:30pm on Saturday. Lee will take on Greeneville at 4:30pm on Saturday in the consolation bracket.

Male continued to dictate the tempo in the second quarter, forcing turnovers and capitalizing in transition to build a 41–24 advantage at halftime.

Jordan Mitchell was named Central Bank Player of the Game after leading all scorers with 21 points, showcasing his ability to score at all three levels while also facilitating the offense and setting the tone defensively. SAINT XAVIER 62, WARREN CENTRAL 54

No. 1 St. Xavier proved once again why it is the defending King of the Bluegrass champion, finding a way to win even when the offense wasn’t flowing at its usual pace.

The Tigers committed 17 turnovers but leaned on timely shooting, rebounding, and late-game composure to pull away from No. 13 Warren Central for a 62-54 victory Thursday night in King of the Bluegrass play at Fairdale High School. The win marked St. Xavier’s fifth straight KOB victory and improved the Tigers to 4-1 on the season.

Josh Lindsay delivered the difference-maker performance for St. Xavier, earning Central Bank Player of the Game honors after scoring a game-high 23 points. Lindsay hit 8 of 12 shots from the field, knocked down three 3-pointers, and sealed the game at the free-throw line in the final seconds as Warren Central made one last push.

Despite entering the game averaging 88.5 points per contest, the defending champions were held to 62 against a physical Warren Central defense that forced turnovers and kept pressure on the ball throughout the night. The Dragons led 13-11 after the first quarter and briefly slowed St. Xavier’s rhythm with early steals and transition buckets.

St. Xavier responded with a decisive second-quarter surge, using a 16-2 run to seize control. The Tigers outscored Warren Central 21-7 in the period, turning defensive rebounds into scoring chances and taking a 32-20 lead into halftime.

The Tigers extended the margin to as many as 19 points late in the third quarter behind balanced contributions. Jeremiah Jackson added 17 points and eight rebounds, while Chief Cameron provided key second-chance opportunities and perimeter shooting. St. Xavier finished with a 37-31 rebounding edge, including 13 offensive boards that helped offset the turnover total.

Warren Central, now 3-1, refused to go quietly. Armani Byrd paced the Dragons with 19 points, and the Dragons cut the deficit to eight late in the fourth quarter. But the defending champions answered with stops and free throws down the stretch to close it out.

It wasn’t the Tigers’ cleanest performance, but it was another statement win that sends the Tigers to Saturday's quarterfinals where they will face North Oldham at 7:30pm. Warren Central will face Grayson County on Saturday at 7:30pm in the consolation bracket.

The game marked a battle of former KOB champions, with Madison Central — the 1998 title winner making its first appearance in the event since 2018 — facing a Trinity program that owns two championships and ranks as the fourth-winningest team in tournament history. By night’s end, the Indians not only stayed unbeaten on the season at 6–0, but also handed the Shamrocks their fourth straight KOB loss.

Madison Central set the tone early behind physical interior play and a steady defensive presence. After a tight opening quarter that featured multiple lead changes, the Indians began to separate in the second period, outscoring Trinity 18–10 to take a 31–22 halftime advantage. That momentum carried into the third quarter, where Madison Central methodically extended the lead to double digits.

Jake Feldhaus was the difference all night. The senior forward delivered a dominant performance on both ends, finishing with a game-high 26 points and 15 rebounds while consistently getting to the free-throw line. Feldhaus, who converted 9 of 15 attempts at the stripe, was named Central Bank Player of the Game after anchoring Madison Central’s inside attack and controlling the glass.

Luke Asher added 11 points and eight rebounds, while Grayson Burton chipped in 16 points, including timely baskets to halt Trinity runs. Madison Central shot an efficient 45.2 percent from the field and won the rebounding battle 37–26, a margin that proved decisive as the game wore on.

Trinity showed resilience in the fourth quarter, trimming the deficit behind strong guard play from Garrison Gilvin, who led the Shamrocks with 12 points, and Griffin Weis, who added 11. But each push was met with timely responses from the Indians, often at the free-throw line, where Madison Central went 19-of-27 on the night.

By the final horn, Madison Central had secured a statement win advancing to the tournament quarterfinals where they will face the winner of Fairdale vs. LaRue County on Saturday at 6:00pm. Trinity will place the loser of the Fairdale vs. LaRue County game in the consolation bracket Saturday at 6:00pm.

NORTH OLDHAM 73, GRAYSON COUNTY 63

After a tightly contested opening quarter, No. 12 North Oldham asserted control on both ends of the floor and pulled away for a 73–63 victory over Grayson County on Thursday afternoon in the opening round of the 2025 Gardner Law King of the Bluegrass at Fairdale High School.

The Mustangs (5–0) shook off an energetic start from the Cougars (2–2) before using a dominant second quarter to seize momentum and never relinquish it.

Grayson County and North Oldham traded punches early, with six ties and five lead changes in the first quarter. The Cougars, led by Jack Logsdon, matched North Oldham basket for basket, and the opening period ended even at 20–20.

That balance vanished quickly in the second quarter.

North Oldham locked in defensively and went on a 16–3 run, holding Grayson County to just three points over the final eight minutes of the half. The Mustangs controlled the glass, generated second-chance opportunities, and found rhythm from the perimeter, building a 36–23 halftime lead.

Tommy Gregg anchored the surge and delivered a complete performance. Gregg finished with 24 points, 13 rebounds, and four three-pointers, earning Central Bank Player of the Game honors for North Oldham. His activity on both ends repeatedly halted Grayson County rallies and set the tone for the Mustangs.

Grayson County showed resilience in the third quarter behind Logsdon, who poured in a game-high 29 points. The Cougars trimmed the deficit to single digits at times, but North Oldham consistently responded, closing the third quarter ahead 56–47.

In the fourth, the Mustangs leaned on composure and execution. Pierre Rondo attacked the rim, drew fouls, and converted at the free-throw line, finishing with 23 points as North Oldham stretched the lead to as many as 18. The Mustangs out-rebounded the Cougars by a wide margin and limited second chances down the stretch to seal the win.

Logsdon’s scoring effort kept Grayson County competitive, while Brody Armstrong added 14 points and Kamden Sanders chipped in six off the bench, but the Cougars were unable to overcome North Oldham’s physicality and depth.

With the victory, North Oldham advances to the quarterfinals of the King of the Bluegrass, remaining unbeaten. The Mustangs will play the winner of Saint Xavier vs. Warren Central on Saturday at 7:30pm. Grayson County will take on the loser of the Saint Xavier vs. Warren Central game at 7:30pm Saturday in the consolation bracket.

With two reigning regional champions, six of Kentucky’s preseason Top 10 teams, 11 teams ranked in the preseason Top 25, and a nationally recognized contender in St. Xavier—ranked No. 41 in the MaxPreps National Preseason Rankings—the 2025 field sets the stage for another unforgettable showcase of talent, toughness, and competitive fire.

Highlighting the field are reigning regional champions St. Xavier (7th Region) and North Laurel (13th Region). St. Xavier, the defending KOB champion, returns a strong nucleus led by senior wing Jeremiah Jackson and standout guards Josh Lindsay and Chief Cameron, while North Laurel brings back Liberty commit Reece Davidson, the preseason No. 1 senior in Kentucky. Adding to the intrigue, the 16-team field includes perennial in-state powers such as Covington Catholic, Male, Frederick Douglass, Madison Central, and Warren Central, along with Tennessee Class 3A powerhouse Greeneville and Alabama 6A contender Lee-Huntsville. Each team arrives with experience, star power, and meaningful expectations, creating one of the deepest fields in recent tournament history.

This year’s tournament also boasts some of the top individual talents in the region. Madison Central’s Jake Feldhaus, a Belmont signee and one of the top Mr. Basketball contenders, anchors one of Kentucky’s most experienced teams. North Laurel’s Reece Davidson, a 6’8” forward and Liberty commit, is widely regarded as one of the state’s most dominant frontcourt players. Covington Catholic’s Athens McGillis, Northern Kentucky’s Preseason Player of the Year, returns after averaging over 20 points per game, while Frederick Douglass star DeMarcus Surratt, a Bellarmine commit, brings explosive scoring and elite athleticism. Other standouts include Grayson County’s Jack Logsdon, a Western Kentucky commit and one of Kentucky’s premier junior scorers, Lyon County leader Bray Kirk, and St. Xavier’s emerging sophomore big man Jordan Jackson. Out-of-state headliners include Greeneville guards Yordan Mills and Taren Claridy, the experienced engines behind one of Tennessee’s most consistent winning programs.

The action tips off with a strong slate of first-round matchups on Thursday. North Oldham, the preseason favorite in the 8th Region, opens against Grayson County, one of the highest-scoring teams in Kentucky behind the trio of Jack Logsdon, Brody Armstrong, and Spencer Langdon. Next, defending KOB champion St. Xavier—ranked No. 1 in Kentucky and No. 41 nationally—takes on Warren Central, a program reloaded with emerging sophomore Armani Byrd. Rounding out opening night, host Fairdale faces LaRue County, with the Bulldogs leaning on sharpshooting senior Michael Ray Stinnett and athletic guard Kamarion Roberts.

The excitement continues with Friday’s games, beginning with a compelling interstate matchup between Male and Greeneville (TN). Male’s trio of Jordan Mitchell, Trey Hillerich, and Jaymes Clark will challenge Greeneville’s experienced guard duo of Mills and Claridy. Covington Catholic, the preseason favorite in the 9th Region, then takes on Lee (AL), whose senior-heavy roster—including Chase Stuart and Je’Rion Peebles—brings defensive intensity and championship pedigree. Frederick Douglass follows with a showdown against Butler, a rising 6th Region contender led by standout guards Adrian Wilder and Henrich Barjolo. The first round concludes with a battle between North Laurel, anchored by Davidson, and Lyon County, guided by Bray Kirk, Isaac Defew, and junior Nolan Coffman.

The tournament continues on Saturday and Sunday, with eight games each day narrowing the field toward Monday’s championship showdown. The consolation bracket, fifth-place game, and third-place matchup ensure plenty of action for fans, culminating in the championship game on Monday evening.

With six preseason Top 10 teams, 11 Top 25 teams, and a nationally ranked contender in St. Xavier, the 2025 event continues its tradition of showcasing many of the region’s brightest young stars. Will a Kentucky powerhouse defend home turf, or will an out-of-state crash the party and take the title home? The answers will unfold over five unforgettable days of hoops, creating memories that players and fans alike will carry long after the final buzzer.
