FAIRDALE 70, TAYLOR COUNTY 67

In an electrifying display of resilience and skill, the Fairdale Bulldogs (8-1) emerged victorious over the Taylor County Cardinals (6-4) with a final score of 70-67 in the opening round 2023 Gardner Law King of the Bluegrass tournament.

The game tipped off with both teams exchanging leads, but Fairdale managed to inch ahead, concluding the first quarter with a 20-15 lead. As the second quarter unfolded, Fairdale's cohesive play extended their lead, with Dalton Hicks and Joseph Hurt applying consistent pressure, leaving Taylor County trailing 44-34 at halftime.

The Bulldogs' momentum faced a hurdle early in the second half when their leading scorer, Joseph Hurt, suffered an injury. With Hurt off the court, Taylor County seized the opportunity, overturning the deficit with a 16-8 run to end the third quarter, leading 57-56 following a CJ Johnson basket at the buzzer.

The final quarter the Bulldogs' tenacity prevailed. With two minutes remaining, Brandon Smith landed a crucial three-pointer, propelling Fairdale to a 66-65 lead. The Bulldogs fortified their defense and held their ground, not allowing the Cardinals to regain the lead.

Dalton Hicks' stellar 21-point performance, marked by crucial baskets and steadfast defense, earned him the Central Bank Player of the Game honors. His efforts were pivotal in ensuring Fairdale’s path forward in the tournament. Fairdale's win sets the stage for their continued pursuit of their first King of the Bluegrass tournament title since 1993.

CENTRAL 90, TAYLOR COUNTY 81

In the third game of the evening it was defending KOB finalist No.1 Taylor County (3-2) and No. 13 Central (4-2). The battle between the two led to 14 ties and 13 lead changes throughout. A quick three-pointer to open the game by Mr. Basketball candidate Quentin Goodin gave Taylor County the early 3-0 lead. The Cardinals lead lasted only two minutes when the lightning fast Yellowjackets went on a 9-0 spurt led by seven points from junior Devin Firman. David Sloan scored five straight for Taylor County to pull the score even at 12-12 but it was a late Central run that gave them a 21-16 lead at the quarter break. A 10-4 Taylor County run put the Cardinals back on top early in the second quarter for the first of six lead changes in the quarter. A pair of three-pointers in the final minute of the half sent Central to the locker room with a 40-38 lead.

The teams exchanged baskets for the first two minutes of the half before a Derron Douglas three-pointer pushed the Central lead to 52-48. The Cardinals were the ones making the final run of the quarter using two transition baskets to pull within 55-53. A Cam Morgeson three-pointer Taylor County the 56-55 lead at the end of the third quarter. Midway through the fourth quarter it was David Sloan putting the exclamation point on a 10-1 Cardinal run with a dunk to take a 68-62 lead. CHAMPIONSHIP -- St. John's 59,Taylor County 56

In a battle of teams making their first King of the Bluegrass Championship appearance it was St. John's (7-2) who claimed the victory over Taylor County (10-1). The win was the Cadets first championship in the event and extended their winning streak to seven games. The game was an instant classic with the teams exchanging the lead twelve times including three lead changes and three ties in the final three minutes of play.

The opening quarter of the game was the Brandon Berry show as the Taylor County senior single-handedly outscored St. John's with 19 points including three 3-point field goals. The Cardinals 23-16 lead at the end of the first quarter didn't last long as Anthony Cowan capped an 8-0 run by St. John's put the Cadets ahead 24-23. An old fashion three-point play by Tre Wood put St. John's on top by four just minutes later. An administrative Technical Foul on St. John's with 1:46 to play put David Sloan at the free throw line where he tied the game at 31-31. Austin Webster put the Cardinals back in the leads with less than twenty seconds to play, but it was Jeffrey Dowtin's 3-pointer with three seconds to play that sent St. John's to the locker room with a 34-33 lead.

St. John's Matas Budrys opened the second half with a three-pointer to push the Cadets ahead by four and it took six straight points by Quentin Goodin to get Taylor County back in it midway through the third quarter. A putback by Brandon Berry gave the Cardinals their first lead of the half but it was short lived as Anthony Cowan drilled a three-pointer on the next possession to put St. John's back ahead. Ezra Oliver's basket with 2:24 remaining in the third quarter gave Taylor County a lead they would hold for nearly the next seven minutes. With 3:32 remaining in the game Jeffrey Dowtin got a block on one end of the floor and a basket on the other to put St. John's back in the lead 53-52. A pair of David Sloan free throws tied the game with 1:48 remaining and a third Sloan free throw put the Cards ahead 55-54 with 51.9 remaining in the game. A foul
on Goodin sent St. John's Cowan back to charity stripe where he hit a pair to put the Cadets ahead 56-55 with 6.1 seconds to play. A Tre Woods foul on the other end sent Sloan back to the free throw line where he hit the first-of-two shots to tie the game with 3.2 remaining. A miss and ensuing foul by Sloan put the Cadets' Dowtin on the line where he hit two free throws to put St. John's ahead 58-56. Anthony Cowan stole the ensuing inbound pass and sealed the St. John's 59-56 win with a final free throw.

Taylor County was led by Brandon Berry's 25 point, 11 rebound performance. All-Tournament Team selections Quentin Goodin and David Sloan added 16 points and 8 points respectively. Tounament Most Valuable Player Anthony Cowan Jr. notched 18 points for the Cadets and All-Tournament Team selection Jeffrey Dowtin added 12 points.

Just one night after both teams upset higher ranked opponents, Doss (6-1) and Taylor County (10-0) shared the spotlight in our opening semifinal. The match up was one of four Top 25 match ups on today's schedule.

A 10-2 run by Taylor County over the next two minutes pushed the Cardinals ahead 19-11 and a Cam Morgeson 3-pointer in the closing minute of the first quarter pushed the lead to twelve points. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Doss' Dujuanta Weaver pulled the Dragons back within two points midway through the second quarter. The Dragons couldn't get any closer in the opening half with Taylor County taking a 46-41 lead to the locker room.

Doss came out hot in the second half scoring the first six points of the half to give them their first lead of the game at 48-46. QUARTERFINAL -- Taylor County 72, Wayne County 68

In a battle between Top 25 programs it was once again the underdog that walked away with the win. It was 17th ranked Taylor County (9-0) who knocked off 7th ranked Wayne County.

The game opened with as much excited as anticipated exchanging the lead twice in the opening four minutes. Wayne County opened their first lead of five points moments later taking advantage of back-to-back misses by Taylor County. A David Sloan steal led to Cam Moregeson's layup to give Taylor County a 17-14 lead at the end of the opening quarter. A Quentin Goodin 3-pointer three minutes into the quarter pushed the Taylor County lead to five points. Peyton Woods' three-point basket with 2:08 remaining in the half capped a 7-2 run to tie the game for the third time. Corey Stearns layup in the final 30 seconds of the first half sent Taylor County into halftime with a two-point lead. Wayne County held Taylor County to just 23% shooting in the second quarter.

Wayne County came out hot to open the second half and quickly expanded their lead to five on multiple occasions. Quentin Goodin then scored thirteen straight points for Taylor County but the Cards couldn't overcome Wayne County who pushed their lead ahead to seven points in the final minute of the third quarter. A Goodin 3-point basket in the opening seconds of the fourth quarter got Taylor County going and the Cardinals took a 52-51 lead moments later. Six lead changes later and Wayne County was back in the lead until David Sloan's coast-to-coast drive tied the game at 63-63 with three minutes remaining in play. Goodin and Sloan combined to score the next seven points for Taylor County and put the Cardinals ahead with 40 seconds remaining. A pair of free throws by senior Brandon Berry sealed the 72-68 victory.
