SAINT XAVIER 76, BRYANT 50

The Saint Xavier Tigers (9-0) captured their first-ever Gardner Law King of the Bluegrass championship with a commanding 76-50 victory over the Bryant Hornets (8-5). With the win, the Tigers remained unbeaten on the season and became the first Louisville-area team to win the prestigious title since Ballard in 2019.

Graham Krezmien led the Tigers with 19 points, five rebounds, and five three-pointers, while Jeremiah Jackson, named the 2024 Bob White Most Valuable Player, contributed eight points, five rebounds, and three assists.

The Tigers came out firing, opening the game with a 15-3 run, including back-to-back three-pointers by Krezmien and Chance Dillingham. Jackson added two triples of his own, as Saint Xavier’s hot shooting from beyond the arc fueled a dominant 26-8 lead after the first quarter. Bryant struggled offensively, shooting just 21.4% in the opening period.

In the second quarter, Saint Xavier continued their balanced attack. Freshman Josh Lindsay added 11 points off the bench, while Dillingham sank another three-pointer to push the lead to 43-20 at halftime. The Tigers shot a blistering 57.7% from the field in the first half, including 60% from three-point range, while Bryant’s Camarion Bead carried the Hornets with six first-half points.

The Hornets opened the third quarter with a brief surge, as Bead scored six of his team-high 17 points. However, Saint Xavier’s defense tightened, forcing turnovers and limiting Bryant’s second-chance opportunities. Krezmien hit two more three-pointers, while Hanke added a putback basket to keep the Tigers comfortably ahead. Saint Xavier outscored Bryant 16-14 in the third quarter, extending their lead to 59-36.

In the fourth quarter, Saint Xavier closed the game in style, with Dillingham and Krezmien each knocking down key shots. The Tigers' defense stifled Bryant’s outside shooting, holding them to just 15% from three-point range for the game. Brandon Dayes added a fast-break layup and a steal in the final minutes to cap off the Tigers' dominant performance.

Krezmien led all scorers with 19 points on 7-of-8 shooting, including 5-of-6 from beyond the arc. Dillingham contributed 14 points, three assists, and flawless free-throw shooting (5-for-5). Lindsay’s 11 points off the bench and Hanke’s consistent two-way play highlighted the Tigers' depth.

For Bryant, Bead finished with 17 points, five rebounds, and four assists, while RJ Young added 14 points and five rebounds. The Hornets struggled to find their rhythm offensively, shooting just 34.4% from the field and committing 17 turnovers.

Saint Xavier’s Chief Cameron and Chance Dillingham were named to the 2024 King of the Bluegrass All-Tournament Team, with Jeremiah Jackson earning MVP honors for his outstanding contributions throughout the event. Bryant’s Camarion Bead, RJ Newton, and RJ Young also earned All-Tournament recognition for their performances.

Saint Xavier’s championship marks a historic milestone for the program, as the Tigers claimed their first KOB title and solidified their position as the top team in Kentucky. For Bryant, the runner-up finish caps an impressive tournament run that saw them become only the second Arkansas team to reach the finals. Both teams showcased remarkable talent and resilience throughout the tournament.

BRYANT (AR) 65, NORTH OLDHAM 41

The Bryant Hornets (8-4) advanced to their first-ever Gardner Law King of the Bluegrass championship with a dominant 65-41 victory over the North Oldham Mustangs (6-3) in the semifinals. Camarion Bead earned Central Bank Player of the Game honors with a stellar 16-point, nine-rebound, and four-assist performance. Bryant also became just the second Arkansas team in tournament history to reach the final.

Bryant wasted no time establishing control in the opening quarter, jumping out to a 20-10 lead. The Hornets’ defense stifled North Oldham, forcing turnovers and converting them into transition points. Bead scored six points in the first quarter, including a putback off an offensive rebound that showcased Bryant’s dominance on the boards.

The Mustangs struggled to generate consistent offense, with Tommy Gregg’s three-pointer and layup providing brief sparks. Gregg finished with a team-high 13 points, including three three-pointers. By halftime, the Hornets extended their lead to 36-21, with RJ Young contributing 10 of his 14 points in the first half.

Bryant’s defensive pressure intensified in the third quarter, holding North Oldham to just four points in the period. Bead continued to lead the way, adding six more points and dominating the glass. The Mustangs shot just 15.4% from the field in the third quarter, while Bryant outscored them 14-4 to take a commanding 50-25 lead into the fourth.

RJ Newton and Young provided key support for the Hornets, combining for 25 points and seven rebounds. Newton’s three assists kept Bryant’s offense fluid, while Young’s interior presence disrupted the Mustangs’ rhythm.

Despite a late push by North Oldham, Bryant maintained control in the final quarter. Pierre Rondo added six points off the bench, while Bead capped his performance with a highlight-reel layup and a block on the defensive end. The Hornets’ rebounding dominance (35-18 overall) and second-chance points (9-2) sealed the victory.

North Oldham’s Gregg and Pierre Rondo provided moments of resistance, but the Mustangs’ 34.8% shooting and 21.7% from three-point range were not enough to overcome Bryant’s balanced attack.

Bead’s all-around effort led the Hornets with 16 points, nine rebounds, and four assists, while Young added 14 points and seven rebounds. Newton contributed 11 points, six assists, and five rebounds, providing steady play on both ends of the floor. Bryant shot an efficient 56.5% from the field and 80% from the free-throw line, highlighting their offensive efficiency.

For North Oldham, Gregg led the way with 13 points, while Rondo chipped in 13 points and two rebounds. The Mustangs struggled to match Bryant’s physicality and depth, committing 13 turnovers and securing just seven offensive rebounds.

Bryant’s victory propels them into their first-ever KOB championship game, where they will look to make history as the first Arkansas team to win the tournament. They will meet Saint Xavier at 7:30pm Sunday. North Oldham will regroup in the 3rd Place Final against Frederick Douglass at 6:00pm Sunday.

Dillingham, who finished with 10 points, hit a clutch three-pointer to help the Tigers outscore the Broncos 24-16 in the quarter. The Tigers’ rebounding dominance (38-24 overall) was critical, as they limited Frederick Douglass to just five second-chance points.

Despite a strong effort from DeMarcus Surratt, who led the Broncos with 16 points and two steals, Frederick Douglass struggled to keep pace. Jaunte Jenkins added 10 points for the Broncos, but their 40.7% shooting and 46.7% free throw percentage hindered their ability to close the gap.

Saint Xavier maintained control in the fourth quarter, with Hanke adding three points and another assist. Jackson finished with 11 points, including a crucial putback late in the game, while Krezmien’s three-pointer midway through the period put the game out of reach. They will meet the winner of North Oldham vs. Bryant (AR) at 7:30pm Sunday. Frederick Douglass moves to the 3rd Place Final where they'll meet the North Oldham-Bryant loser at 6:00pm Sunday.

The Tigers opened the third quarter with a strong defensive effort, forcing multiple turnovers and converting them into points. Cameron scored six of his 16 points in the quarter, including a layup that extended Saint Xavier’s lead to 10 points. The Tigers outscored the Yellow Jackets 13-10 in the period, maintaining a 46-40 advantage heading into the final frame.

Bone continued to carry the Yellow Jackets offensively, finishing with a game-high 28 points and eight rebounds. Despite his efforts, Woodford County struggled to match Saint Xavier’s defensive intensity, committing 22 turnovers that led to 29 points for the Tigers.

The final quarter was a back-and-forth battle, with Woodford County cutting the deficit to two points after a Wade three-pointer and a Boone layup. FREDERICK DOUGLASS 77, FAIRDALE 45

The 11th ranked Frederick Douglass Broncos (5-1) delivered a dominant 77-45 victory over the host Fairdale Bulldogs (6-3) in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Gardner Law King of the Bluegrass tournament, advancing to the semifinals for the first time in program history. Behind a stellar performance from Central Bank Player of the Game DeMarcus Surratt, the Broncos became the first Lexington school to advance to the KOB semifinals since Lafayette accomplished the feat in 2000.

Surratt showcased his dominance with a game-high 23 points and nine rebounds, leading a balanced and efficient offensive attack while anchoring the Broncos’ suffocating defense.

Frederick Douglass started strong, using defensive pressure and fast-break opportunities to take control. Surratt scored eight points in the first quarter, including a powerful dunk that ignited a 10-2 run. Jaunte Jenkins added a three-pointer as the Broncos led 16-10 after the first period.

In the second quarter, the Broncos extended their lead with a relentless defensive effort. Surratt and Tate Robinson combined for 18 points in the quarter, with Robinson sinking two three-pointers during a 14-1 run. Frederick Douglass shot 50% from the field and converted 13 Fairdale turnovers into 30 points, showcasing their efficiency on both ends of the court.

Jordan Mabe was the standout performer, earning Central Bank Player of the Game honors for his 26-point effort that included several clutch moments.

The first half was defined by defensive intensity and offensive struggles, with both teams combining for just 30 points. South Laurel’s 11 points tied the tournament record for the fewest in a half, set in 1997. Combined, the teams fell one point short of tying the record for the fewest combined points in a half, set in 1983 when Jeffersontown and Meade County combined for 29.

Mabe managed just six points in the half, while Trinity capitalized on South Laurel’s shooting woes to build a 19-11 halftime lead. Jayden Johnson and Avery Frasher combined for 13 of Trinity’s points as the Shamrocks took advantage of turnovers and second-chance opportunities.

South Laurel came alive in the third quarter behind Mabe’s aggressive scoring and improved shooting from the field. The Cardinals shot 60% in the second half, with Mabe scoring 12 points during regulation’s final two quarters. Kaiden McQueen added key rebounds, while Colton Rawlings hit a timely three-pointer to keep the Cardinals within striking distance.

Trinity’s Frasher and Johnson continued to pace the Shamrocks offensively, but the Cardinals’ defensive adjustments and timely baskets allowed them to claw back. Mabe hit a three-pointer with 21.4 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 41 and force overtime. In overtime, Mabe took over. He scored the first basket of the extra period and followed it with a go-ahead free throw with just 11.8 seconds remaining. South Laurel’s defense stood strong, forcing a pair of missed shots by Trinity's Jarden Johnson on the game’s final possession to secure the win.

Mabe finished with a game-high 26 points on 9-of-18 shooting, adding three rebounds and two steals. Rawlings contributed eight points and eight rebounds, while McQueen’s defensive presence proved invaluable in critical moments.

For Trinity, Frasher led with 15 points and five rebounds, while Johnson added eight points and six boards. The Shamrocks shot just 34.1% from the field and committed 14 turnovers, which proved costly in such a tightly contested game.

South Laurel, in their first KOB appearance since 1995, advances to Friday's quarterfinals where they'll meet North Oldham at 9:00pm.  Trinity moves to the consolation bracket where they'll play Adair County at 9:00pm Friday.

FREDERICK DOUGLASS 72, MALE 64

In a battle of momentum swings, the 11th ranked Frederick Douglass Broncos (4-1) outlasted the 4th ranked Male Bulldogs (6-2) in a hard-fought 72-64 win at the 2024 Gardner Law King of the Bluegrass tournament. Jaunte Jenkins led the way for the Broncos, earning Central Bank Player of the Game honors with a stellar 21-point, 11-rebound double-double performance.

The Broncos set the tone early with a dominant first quarter, outscoring the Bulldogs 20-8. Jenkins was instrumental in establishing the early lead, scoring four points and controlling the glass with his rebounding. Male struggled to find offensive rhythm, shooting just 23.1% from the field in the opening quarter while Frederick Douglass capitalized on turnovers and second-chance opportunities.

Frederick Douglass extended their lead in the second quarter, with Dakari Talbert and DeMarcus Surratt combining for key baskets. Talbert sank a three-pointer late in the period, and Jenkins added six more points, including a putback off an offensive rebound. The Broncos’ defense held Male to 25.9% shooting in the first half, building a commanding 34-18 halftime lead.

Male came alive in the third quarter, sparked by Jordan Mitchell’s relentless scoring. Mitchell, who finished with a game-high 28 points and eight rebounds, scored nine points in the period, including a three-pointer and a fast-break layup that cut the deficit to six. Jayson Gasaway added key contributions, scoring 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting and helping Male close the quarter trailing 50-39.

In the final quarter, Jenkins reasserted his dominance. He scored eight points, including a critical layup and free throws that kept Male at bay during their comeback attempt. Talbert, who contributed 14 points and four rebounds, hit a clutch jumper midway through the quarter to maintain the Broncos’ lead. Despite Mitchell and Gasaway’s late-game heroics, Male couldn’t overcome their first-half deficit.

The Broncos’ balanced attack was key, with Surratt adding 12 points and five rebounds. Frederick Douglass capitalized on Male’s turnovers, scoring 22 points off 19 giveaways. The Broncos also dominated second-chance opportunities, outscoring the Bulldogs 12-9 in that category.

Male’s rally was commendable, with Mitchell leading the charge and Gasaway providing timely scoring, but the Bulldogs were unable to overcome their slow start. Jenkins’s ability to control the tempo and deliver under pressure earned him the Player of the Game recognition.

Frederick Douglass advances to Friday's 6:00pm quarterfinal against host Fairdale. Male will look to rebound in the consolation bracket as they take on Butler County at 6:00pm Friday.

Despite Castlen’s efforts to keep the Bears within reach, the Bulldogs carried a 38-32 advantage into halftime.

The third quarter was where Fairdale blew the game open. Mandic, who led all Bulldogs with 22 points, fueled a 16-2 run that included a mix of layups, free throws, and a three-pointer. Wright’s presence in the paint and Sean Malone’s contributions off the bench added to Butler County’s struggles to keep pace. Tommy Gregg, whose dynamic performance guided the Mustangs’ resurgence, was named the Central Bank Most Valuable Player of the game.

The Indians came out firing in the first quarter, building an early lead with sharp shooting from beyond the arc. Dawson Gilbert set the tone, sinking a three-pointer midway through the quarter, and Blane Bardin’s back-to-back triples in the final minute pushed Adair County to a 20-17 advantage at the break. Gilbert finished with 17 points, and Bardin added 14 off the bench, as the Indians relied heavily on their perimeter game.

Adair County extended their lead in the second quarter behind steady contributions from Isaiah Cochran in the paint. Cochran, who tallied 10 points and eight rebounds overall, kept the Indians in control of the tempo. Meanwhile, the Mustangs struggled to find offensive rhythm, shooting just 30.8% in the second quarter. At halftime, Adair County led 36-28, seemingly in control.

The turning point came in the third quarter. Gregg, who had been relatively quiet in the first half, erupted with a string of highlight plays, including a deep three-pointer off an assist from Colin Daniels early in the period. Gregg’s hot shooting ignited a 24-9 run, capped by a second-chance layup from Daniels to give North Oldham a 52-45 lead heading into the fourth quarter. The Mustangs shot a blistering 76.9% from the field during the quarter, while Adair County managed just 33.3%.

The Indians fought back valiantly in the final period. Connor Loy’s aggressive drives to the basket and timely jumpers helped Adair County close the gap to two points with under two minutes remaining. Loy finished with 13 points and five assists, leading the late push. However, turnovers proved costly, including a critical steal by Gregg that led to a fast-break score, extending the Mustangs’ lead.

Brooks Cargould also played a key role in sealing the game for North Oldham, scoring 18 points and hitting a dagger three-pointer in the closing minutes. Daniels dominated the boards with 10 rebounds and added defensive stops that stifled Adair County’s offense down the stretch.

The Mustangs’ 20-2 run during the second half was fueled by Gregg’s ability to hit contested shots and capitalize on defensive lapses. His final line—22 points on 9-of-10 shooting, including 4-of-5 from three-point range—cemented his selection as the game’s MVP.

With the victory, North Oldham advances to the quarterfinals Friday at 9pm where they will take on the winner of Trinity vs. South Laurel. Adair County will play Friday at 9pm in the consolation bracket against the Trinity-South Laurel loser.
