BRYANT (AR) 74, BRYAN STATION 64

The Bryant Hornets (7-4) secured a statement 74-64 victory over the previously unbeaten Bryan Station Defenders (6-1) in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Gardner Law King of the Bluegrass tournament. RJ Young, the Central Bank Player of the Game, delivered a masterful performance with 29 points, six rebounds, and five assists to propel the Hornets into the semifinals. Bryant’s win marks the second straight year that an Arkansas team has advanced to the semifinals of this prestigious tournament.

The game began with both teams trading baskets and defensive stops. Bryan Station’s Amari Owens started strong, attacking the rim and finishing the half with 17 points. The Defenders capitalized on turnovers and offensive rebounds to edge ahead 19-17 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Hornets began to assert themselves. Young showcased his versatility, scoring seven points in the period, including a critical three-pointer that helped Bryant take a narrow 31-30 lead into halftime. Camarion Bead provided support with 10 first-half points, including several key inside baskets.

The third quarter saw the Defenders regain a slight edge behind Owens’ relentless scoring. Owens added 12 points in the second half to finish with a game-high 36 points. However, Bryant’s defense tightened, forcing turnovers that led to transition opportunities. Young continued to shine, scoring nine points in the quarter and setting up teammates with pinpoint passes.

Heading into the fourth quarter, the Defenders clung to a 49-48 lead. But the Hornets flipped the script with a 13-2 run fueled by Young’s leadership and Bead’s inside presence. Bryant outscored Bryan Station 29-17 in the final quarter, sealing the win with clutch free throws and timely stops.

Young’s dominant play was complemented by Bead, who finished with 21 points and four rebounds. RJ Newton added 10 points and three assists, playing a vital role in Bryant’s fourth-quarter surge. The Hornets shot an efficient 52% from the field and converted 85.7% of their free throws, showcasing their offensive precision.

For Bryan Station, Owens was a force, scoring 36 points on 13-of-28 shooting. Taeshawn Adams contributed 10 points and six rebounds, while Brunley Fon added seven points and five rebounds off the bench. Despite their efforts, the Defenders were undone by 15 turnovers and struggled to contain Bryant’s balanced attack.

Bryant advances to Saturday's semifinals where they'll meet the winner of South Laurel vs. North Oldham at 9:00pm. Meanwhile, Bryan Station will regroup in the 5th Place bracket, where they meet the South Laurel-North Oldham loser at 4:30pm on Saturday.
