Covington Catholic 79, North Laurel 67 -- FINAL
The 2021 King of the Bluegrass Championship lived up to all the hype as top 10 opponent Covington Catholic and North Laurel battled it out for 32 minutes. It was a strong shooting second half and depth that eventually helped Covington Catholic pull out the 79-67 victory to claim their first ever King of the Bluegrass Championship. The opening quarter saw the two teams exchange the lead seven times. Covington Catholic ended the quarter with three straight three-point baskets to take a 16-14 lead at the quarter break. The Colonels lead grew to as many as four points early in the quarter. Reed Sheppard pulled North Laurel back within 23-24 with a three-pointer three minutes into the second quarter. Evan Ipsaro scored the last eight points of the half for the Colonels who used an 9-2 run to push their lead to eight points where it stood at the half 37-29.
A 5-0 run to open the second half got the Jaguars right back into the game cutting the lead to 37-34. Covington Catholic countered with their own 8-3 run to go back ahead by eight points. Six straight points by Sheppard kept the hopes alive for North Laurel as they got as close as 45-43 with 3:35 remaining in the third quarter. The Colonels quickly dashed their hopes of a comeback as Brady Hussey buried a pair of three-pointers to go ahead 53-43. A three-pointer by North Laurel's Brody Brock on the opening possession of the fourth quarter pulled the Jaguars back within four points at 55-51. Covington Catholic held them off Hussey scoring seven big points down the stretch to propel the Colonels lead to the final margin of 12 points at 79-67. Covington Catholic's defensive effort forced 11 North Laurel turnovers and held the Jaguars to 50% shooting. The Colonels outrebounded the Jaguars 32-24 and the Covington Catholic bench outscored the Jaguars bench 16-0.Evan Ipsaro led all scorers with 34 points to lead the Colonels. Covington Catholic got 19 points and 10 rebounds from Mitchell Rylee and 13 points from Brady Hussey. Bob White Most Valuable Player selection Reed Sheppard led North Laurel with a triple-double with 25 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. Ryan Davidson added 25 points for the Jaguars.

Schedule of Play -- Tuesday, December 21st
North Laurel 74, Dorman (SC) 66
6th ranked North Laurel connected on 14 three-point baskets to propel them past Dorman (SC) 74-66 and send the Jaguars to the first ever KOB Championship game. The two teams set the pace in the opening quarter connecting on six three-point field goals as they exchanged the lead five times. North Laurel converted 3 Dorman turnovers into 5 points to help propel them on an 11-2 run in the final half of the quarter. The Jaguars lead grew to as many as 12 points early in the second quarter following a pair of three-pointers by Reed Sheppard. Dorman would end the half on a 10-3 run to go to the locker room trailing 22-27. A pair of free throws by Jordan Miller would tie the game at 31-31 midway through the third quarter. Dorman would take the lead on their next possession. They would exchange the lead a pair of times throughout the end of the quarter with Noah Clowney's basket in the closing seconds of the quarter putting Dorman back ahead 42-40. Sheppard's three pointer one minute into the fourth quarter, one of five early Jaguar three-pointers in the quarter, would give North Laurel the lead for good at 46-44. A pair of free throws by Jordyn Surratt would pull Dorman back within a point at 52-51 but they could never take back the lead. The Jaguars outscored Dorman 18-7 over the next four minutes to extend their lead to as many as 12 points with a minute to play in the game. A pair of three-point baskets by Christian Andrews and Jordan Miller gave the Cavaliers hope cutting the lead to 64-70 in the final minute but time ran out on Dorman's comeback and the Jaguars advanced. North Laurel outscored Dorman 42-21 from three-point range while shooting 47% from long distance.
Reed Sheppard led all scorers with 34 points while adding 6 assists and 9 steals for the Jaguars. Central Bank Player of the Game Clay Sizemore added 16 points for North Laurel. Christian Andrews and Jordan Miller led Dorman in scoring with 16 point each.
North Laurel will play Covington Catholic on Tuesday at 7:30pm in the 2021 Gardner Law King of the Bluegrass Championship. Dorman will play Male for 3rd place at 6:00pm Tuesday.
Covington Catholic 68, Male 56
A strong defensive effort by No. 3 Covington Catholic helped the Colonels roll past No. 2 Male 68-56 to advance to their first KOB Championships appearance. A fast-paced first quarter saw the two teams battle back-and-forth with Male taking an early 5-0 lead before they exchanged the lead three different times. Chandler Starks would finish with 9 first quarter points to help the Colonels take a 17-13 lead at the quarter break. The Colonels opened the second quarter with three straight three-point baskets to extend their lead to 26-16. The Colonels lead grew to as many as 12 points midway through the quarter before a 8-0 run by Male to end the half cut the Covington Catholic lead to 26-30. Male would get as close as two points on their first two possessions of the second half but never got any closer. A 9-2 spurt by the Colonels put them firmly back in control at 41-32. Max Gainey's three-pointer with 1:30 remaining in the third quarter pulled Male back within 4 points but the Colonels then went on a 9-1 run to open the fourth quarter and then Bulldogs never got closer than eight points for the remainder of the game. Covington Catholic held Male to just 41% shooting from the field and forced 12 Bulldog turnovers in the game.
Central Bank Player of the game Evan Ipsaro led all scorers with 17 points and added 5 rebounds and 5 assists for the Colonels. Chandler Starks added 13 points and Mitchell Rylee recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds for Covington Catholic. Kaleb Glenn led the way for Male with 12 points and 7 rebounds. Jack Edelen added 11 points for the Bulldogs.
Covington Catholic advance to their first KOB Championship on Tuesday night at 7:30pm to play the winner of North Laurel vs. Dorman (SC). Male will play the loser of North Laurel vs. Dorman in the 3rd place game at 6:00pm Tuesday.

Male 69, Ashland Blazer 66
No. 2 Male overcomes third quarter lull to come from behind and defeat No. 5 Ashland Blazer 69-66 to advance to the semifinals. A back-and-forth opening quarter of play set the stage for a thrilling finish. Male, who scored on their opening possession, controlled much of the first quarter building a 6-point lead late in the quarter. Colin Porter's basket in the opening minute of the second quarter pulled Ashland within 19-15 before the Bulldogs reeled off a 9-0 run extending their lead to 13 points at 28-15. The Bulldogs saw their lead swell to as many as 18 points with two minutes to play in the half, but a 10-4 Ashland run kept things a bit closer at the half with Male leading 41-29. The Tomcats exploded in the second half scoring 20 of the first 25 points in the third quarter to take a 50-46 lead following a steal and old-fashioned three-point play by Ethan Sellars. A basket by Kaleb Glenn on the opening possession of the fourth quarter put Male back ahead at 51-50. The Tomcats would score the next ten points to lead 60-51 with six minutes to play in the game. Jack Edelen's basket with 2:10 remaining in the game capped a 12-4 run by the Bulldogs to pull them within 64-63. Ryan Atkins basket on Ashland next possession kept the Tomcats ahead by 3 points with 1:32 remaining, but they wouldn't score again. Male's defensive pressure forced three turnovers and two missed shots over the final minute of play and a pair of baskets by Dez Lindsay and Jack Edelen were all it took for the Bulldogs to claim the victory.
Central Bank Player of the Game Jack Edelen led all scorers with 29 points for the Bulldogs. Kaleb Glenn added 20 points and 9 rebounds for Male. Colin Porter led Ashland Blazer with 24 points and 5 assists and Ethan Sellars added 23 points.
Male advances to Monday's semifinals where they will play Covington Catholic at 7:30pm. Ashland Blazer with take on host Fairdale at 6:00pm Monday in the consolation bracket.
North Laurel 78, North Oldham 73
North Laurel gets 45 points from junior Reed Sheppard as they hold off North Oldham for a 78-73 victory to advance to the semifinals. Three early turnovers by North Laurel saw the Jaguars fall behind 7-2 in the opening minutes of play. North Laurel could never get closer than three points in the opening quarter with the Mustangs taking a 14-9 lead into the quarter break. A three-pointer by North Oldham's Grant Neal saw the Mustangs lead extend to 8 points two minutes in the second quarter. A steal and basket by Sheppard midway through the quarter highlighted a 12-2 run by the Jaguars the saw them take the lead at 23-21. North Laurel went to the locker room at the half leading 27-25. A Dallas Roberts basket to open the second half tied the game for the fourth time and an old-fashioned three-point play by Roberts two minutes later would keep it knotted at 30-30. Roberts gave the Mustangs their first lead of the half with a bucket three minutes into the second half. The North Oldham lead grew to as many as five points midway through the quarter before an 8-5 North Laurel run pulled the Jaguars within 41-43 going into the fourth quarter. The two teams combined for a tournament record 67 points in the fourth quarter in a back-and-forth affair that saw four ties and three lead changes in the opening minutes of the quarter. A pair of free throws by Sheppard kicked off a 7-0 run for the Jaguars who led 54-48. North Oldham got as close as a basket on four occasions but couldn't overtake the Jaguars. A Jack Scales three-pointer with 10.7 seconds remaining in the game gave North Oldham their last hope but a pair of free throws by Sheppard was followed up by a steal to seal the game.
Central Bank Player of the Game Reed Sheppard led all scorers with a dominant 45 point, 8 rebound, 7 steal performance, which marks 7th all-time in KOB single game scoring. Ryan Davidson and Caden Harris each added 10 points for North Laurel. North Oldham was led by Dallas Roberts with 21 points. Jack Scales added 16 points for the Mustangs.
North Laurel advances to Monday's semifinals to play Dorman (SC) at 9:00pm. North Oldham will take on George Rogers Clark at 4:30pm on Monday in the consolation bracket.
Covington Catholic 82, Fairdale 50
The No.3 Colonels of Covington Catholic jumped on the host Bulldogs and never looked back in route to an 82-50 victory and berth in the semifinals. Seven straight points by Evan Ipsaro midway through the opening quarter extended the Colonels lead to 19-4. Fairdale would never get any closer. Fairdale used a 6-0 run early in the second quarter to keep the lead at 16 points trailing 16-32. Ipsaro and Mekhi Wilson combined for 12 of the next 14 points for Covington Catholic whose lead grew to as many as 26 points late in the first half. Fairdale never got closer than 24 points for the remainder of the game with the Colonels lead swelling to as many as 37 points. A late 10-5 run by the Bulldogs cut the final margin to 50-82.
Central Bank Player of the Game Evan Ipsaro led all scorers with 27 points and a game-high 9 assists for the Colonels. Mitchell Rylee added 21 points for Covington Catholic. Dalton Hicks led Fairdale in scoring with 16 points and 5 steals. Jacob Tucker added 13 points for the Bulldogs.

Dorman (SC) 59, George Rogers Clark 57
The Cavaliers of Dorman used an early fourth quarter surge to survive a gutsy performance by No.4 George Rogers Clark with a 59-57 win and advance to the semifinals. The two unbeaten squads battled back-and-forth throughout the opening quarter exchanging the lead six times. A Jordyn Surrat three-pointer would give Dorman the lead at 10-9 to end the quarter and the Cavaliers would never trail again. Surrat would score 11 points in the second quarter to pace the Cavaliers who extended their lead to as many as 7 points and led 22-16 at the half. George Rogers Clark slowly chipped away at the Dorman lead and a pair of free throws by Trent Edwards three minutes into the second half would tie the score at 28-28. A Chase Harris three-pointer with 1:30 remaining in the third quarter capped a 7-0 run by Dorman that put the Cavalier back in control. Aden Slone's three-pointer with 5:31 remining in the game ended an 11-5 run by the Cardinals that pulled them within 41-42. Dorman answered with their own 11-1 run behind seven points from Noah Clowney to push their lead back to 53-42 with 2:30 remaining in the game. A pair of three-pointers from Slone kept the Cardinals hopes alive as they pulled to within 52-57 over the next two minutes of play. George Roger Clark's Tanner Walton connected on a pair of free throws to cut the Dorman lead to three points. A Dorman turnover in the final 30 seconds of play eventually sent Jerone Morton to the free throw line with 18 seconds remaining where he connected on one of two free throws to pull the Cardinals within 55-57. Surrat and Clowney would each miss one of two free throws on Dorman's next two possessions to give George Rogers Clark a chance trailing 59-57. A strong defensive stand by Dorman kept the Cardinals from getting a good look at a last second shot and they held on to advance.
Central Bank Player of the Game Jorden Surrat led Dorman with a game-high 24 points. Noah Clowney added 15 points and 7 rebounds for the Cavaliers. Jerone Morton led George Rogers Clark with 20 points and 7 rebounds. Trent Edwards added 14 points for the Cardinals.

Here is a look at Sunday's matchups as all 16 teams will be in action with 8 games in two gyms.
Ashland Blazer 87, Lyon County 81
A barrage of second half three-points helped No. 5 Ashland Blazer overcame a slow start to advance with a 87-81 win over No. 25 Lyon County. Ashland Blazer connected on a trio of three-point baskets in the opening quarter but shot just 31% and could keep up with the Lyons, who got 10 first quarter points from Travis Perry to lead 21-13. The offensive woes continued in the second quarter for the Tomcats as they shot 3/11 (27%) from the field and trailed by as many as 18 points at 38-20 midway through the second quarter. A 6-0 run at the end of the first half got things going for Ashland Blazer as they cut the halftime lead to26-38. The Tomcats hit 8 three-pointers in the third quarter and quickly saw the Lyon County lead dwindle to 53-50 going into the fourth quarter. Ethan Sellars fifth three-pointer of the second half gave the Tomcats a 58-57 lead in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter. The teams would exchange the lead four times over the next two minutes with Cole Villers three-pointer midway through the final period putting Ashland Blazer ahead for good. Lyon County would never get closer than four points in the final two minutes of play as the Tomcats tournament record 61 points in the second half was enough to claim the victory.
Ethan Sellars led the Tomcats in scoring with 25 points and 7 three-point baskets. Cole Villers added 24 points for Ashland Blazer and Colin Porter recorded a double-double with 19 points and 12 assists. Lyon County was led by Travis Perry with a game-high 32 points and 8 assists. Jackson Shoulders added 20 points and 8 rebounds for the Lyons.
Ashland Blazer advances to Sunday's quarterfinals to take on Male at 9:00pm. Lyon County will play Belfy at 9:00pm Sunday in the consolation bracket.
Male 103, Belfry 81
Kentucky's 2nd ranked Male Bulldogs controlled their opening round matchup from the opening tip defeating Belfry 103-81. The Bulldogs jumped out to an 21-6 lead at the end of the opening quarter of play and never looked back. Belfry would cut the Male lead to as few as six points with three minutes to play in the opening half before an 11-4 Male run sent them to halftime leading 43-30. The lead grew to as many as 24 points in the third quarter for the Dogs and despite shooting 64% in the quarter Belfry never got closer than 13 points. A 9-1 run by Belfry to end the third quarter and open the fourth quarter saw the Pirates claw back to within 13 points again but Male continued to dominate with their lead swelling to a game-high 25 point in the final two minutes of play. Male outrebounded the Pirates 46-31.
Male was led by Central Bank Player of the Game Kaleb Glenn with 25 points, 8 rebounds and 4 blocks. The Bulldogs had five other players in double digits including Jack Edelen with 16 points and Demetrius White who recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Belfry was led by De'Mahjae Clark with a game-high 28 points. Sal Dean and Tykee Peterson each added 19 points for the Pirates.
Male will advance to Sunday's quarterfinals to play the winner of the Ashland Blazer vs. Lyon County game at 9:00pm. Belfry will play the loser of the Ashland Blazer vs. Lyon County game at 9:00pm Sunday in the consolation bracket.
George Rogers Clark 76, Lake Highland (FL) 60
George Rogers Clark used a dominant second half performance to advance past Lake Highland Preparatory (Orlando, FL) 76-60 in the opening round. A back-and-forth opening half of action saw the Cardinals and Highlands exchange the lead five different times. Ohio State commit Brice Sensabaugh scored 16 first-half points for the Highlanders who used a 15-5 spurt to take a five-point lead midway through the second quarter. A late run by the Cardinals put them back ahead 29-28 at the half. The Cardinals lead grew to as many as 8 points early in the second half. Sensabaugh would get the Highlanders back to within 4 points midway through the third quarter, but they never got any closer. George Rogers Clark would outscore them 12-2 to end the third quarter and never took their foot off the gas. The Cardinals lead swelled to as many as 20 points at 63-43 before eventually finishing with the sixteen-point victory.
Central Bank Player of the Game Jerone Morton led the way for the Cardinals with a game-high 30 points and 9 rebounds. Trent Edwards and Tanner Walton added 15 points and 14 points respectively for George Rogers Clark. Brice Sensabaugh led Lake Highland with 26 points and 9 rebounds. Jared Berry added 22 points for the Highlanders.
George Rogers Clark advances to Sunday's quarterfinals to take on Dorman (SC) at 4:30pm. Lake Highland will play Ensworth (TN) at 4:30pm Sunday in the consolation bracket.

North Laurel 72, Eastern 56
North Laurel held off a third quarter surge from Eastern before advancing to the quarterfinals with a comfortable 72-56 victory. The Jaguars got off to a hot start from three-point range connecting on four early 3-point baskets to jump ahead 14-2. Eastern would battle back to tie the game in the opening minute of the second quarter but before a 9-2 North Laurel put the Jaguars back in control. Eastern cut the North Laurel lead from 14 points to 3 on a late third quarter run, but never got any closer. The Jaguars outscored the Eagles 21-10 in the fourth quarter. North Laurel was 10/20 (50%) from 3-point range in the game and a balanced attack saw four Jaguard score in double digits.
Ryan Davidson led the way for North Laurel with a game-high 22 points. Clay Sizemore added 18 points for the Jaguars and University of Kentucky commit Reed Sheppard recorded a double-double with 15 points and 14 assists. Jaden Johnson led the Eagles in scoring with 15 points.
North Laurel advances to Sunday's quarterfinals to take on North Oldham at 7:30pm. Eastern will take on Paul Dunbar Sunday at 7:30pm in the consolation bracket.
Covington Catholic 68, Trinity 51
Trinity finds themselves in unfamiliar territory after falling 51-68 to No. 3 Covington Catholic in their KOB opener. The Shamrocks who had advanced to four of the last five KOB semifinals kept things close early with a trio of three-point buckets, but Covington Catholic opened the second quarter on a 9-1 run to gain control of the game. The second half of the game saw Covington Catholic firmly in control with their lead ballooning to as many as 20 points. The Colonels defense forced the Shamrocks in 19 turnovers in the game.
The duo of Evan Ipsaro and Kascyl McGillis led the way for Covington Catholic with 21 points each. Mitchell Rylee added a double-double for the Colonels with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Cameron McClain led Trinity with 15 points.
Covington Catholic will advance to Sunday's quarterfinals to take on host Fairdale at 6:00pm. Trinity will take on Marion County at 6:00pm Sunday in the consolation bracket.
Fairdale 75, Marion County 30
The host Bulldogs smothered Marion County defensively in their opener to advance to the quarterfinals with a 77-30 victory. Fairdale forced 18 first have turnover by the Knights to take a 46-18 lead into halftime. The Bulldogs who held Marion County to 13/39 (33.3%) shooting in the game never looked back in the second half as they extended their lead to as many as 47 points.

Fairdale advances to the Sunday's quarterfinals where they will meet the winner of Covington Catholic vs. Trinity at 6:00pm. Marion County will play the loser of Covington Catholic vs. Trinity at 6:00pm Sunday in the consolation bracket.
