A strong defensive effort by No. 3 Covington Catholic helped the Colonels roll past No. 2 Male 68-56 to advance to their first KOB Championships appearance. A fast-paced first quarter saw the two teams battle back-and-forth with Male taking an early 5-0 lead before they exchanged the lead three different times. Chandler Starks would finish with 9 first quarter points to help the Colonels take a 17-13 lead at the quarter break. The Colonels opened the second quarter with three straight three-point baskets to extend their lead to 26-16. The Colonels lead grew to as many as 12 points midway through the quarter before a 8-0 run by Male to end the half cut the Covington Catholic lead to 26-30. Male would get as close as two points on their first two possessions of the second half but never got any closer. A 9-2 spurt by the Colonels put them firmly back in control at 41-32. Max Gainey's three-pointer with 1:30 remaining in the third quarter pulled Male back within 4 points but the Colonels then went on a 9-1 run to open the fourth quarter and then Bulldogs never got closer than eight points for the remainder of the game. Covington Catholic held Male to just 41% shooting from the field and forced 12 Bulldog turnovers in the game.
Central Bank Player of the game Evan Ipsaro led all scorers with 17 points and added 5 rebounds and 5 assists for the Colonels. Chandler Starks added 13 points and Mitchell Rylee recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds for Covington Catholic. Kaleb Glenn led the way for Male with 12 points and 7 rebounds. Jack Edelen added 11 points for the Bulldogs.
Covington Catholic advance to their first KOB Championship on Tuesday night at 7:30pm to play the winner of North Laurel vs. Dorman (SC). Male will play the loser of North Laurel vs. Dorman in the 3rd place game at 6:00pm Tuesday.
