North Laurel gets 45 points from junior Reed Sheppard as they hold off North Oldham for a 78-73 victory to advance to the semifinals. Three early turnovers by North Laurel saw the Jaguars fall behind 7-2 in the opening minutes of play. North Laurel could never get closer than three points in the opening quarter with the Mustangs taking a 14-9 lead into the quarter break. A three-pointer by North Oldham's Grant Neal saw the Mustangs lead extend to 8 points two minutes in the second quarter. A steal and basket by Sheppard midway through the quarter highlighted a 12-2 run by the Jaguars the saw them take the lead at 23-21. North Laurel went to the locker room at the half leading 27-25. A Dallas Roberts basket to open the second half tied the game for the fourth time and an old-fashioned three-point play by Roberts two minutes later would keep it knotted at 30-30. Roberts gave the Mustangs their first lead of the half with a bucket three minutes into the second half. The North Oldham lead grew to as many as five points midway through the quarter before an 8-5 North Laurel run pulled the Jaguars within 41-43 going into the fourth quarter. The two teams combined for a tournament record 67 points in the fourth quarter in a back-and-forth affair that saw four ties and three lead changes in the opening minutes of the quarter. A pair of free throws by Sheppard kicked off a 7-0 run for the Jaguars who led 54-48. North Oldham got as close as a basket on four occasions but couldn't overtake the Jaguars. A Jack Scales three-pointer with 10.7 seconds remaining in the game gave North Oldham their last hope but a pair of free throws by Sheppard was followed up by a steal to seal the game.
Central Bank Player of the Game Reed Sheppard led all scorers with a dominant 45 point, 8 rebound, 7 steal performance, which marks 7th all-time in KOB single game scoring. Ryan Davidson and Caden Harris each added 10 points for North Laurel. North Oldham was led by Dallas Roberts with 21 points. Jack Scales added 16 points for the Mustangs.
North Laurel advances to Monday's semifinals to play Dorman (SC) at 9:00pm. North Oldham will take on George Rogers Clark at 4:30pm on Monday in the consolation bracket.
