FAIRDALE 70, TAYLOR COUNTY 67

In an electrifying display of resilience and skill, the Fairdale Bulldogs (8-1) emerged victorious over the Taylor County Cardinals (6-4) with a final score of 70-67 in the opening round 2023 Gardner Law King of the Bluegrass tournament.

The game tipped off with both teams exchanging leads, but Fairdale managed to inch ahead, concluding the first quarter with a 20-15 lead. As the second quarter unfolded, Fairdale's cohesive play extended their lead, with Dalton Hicks and Joseph Hurt applying consistent pressure, leaving Taylor County trailing 44-34 at halftime.

The Bulldogs' momentum faced a hurdle early in the second half when their leading scorer, Joseph Hurt, suffered an injury. With Hurt off the court, Taylor County seized the opportunity, overturning the deficit with a 16-8 run to end the third quarter, leading 57-56 following a CJ Johnson basket at the buzzer.

The final quarter the Bulldogs' tenacity prevailed. With two minutes remaining, Brandon Smith landed a crucial three-pointer, propelling Fairdale to a 66-65 lead. The Bulldogs fortified their defense and held their ground, not allowing the Cardinals to regain the lead.

Dalton Hicks' stellar 21-point performance, marked by crucial baskets and steadfast defense, earned him the Central Bank Player of the Game honors. His efforts were pivotal in ensuring Fairdale’s path forward in the tournament. Fairdale's win sets the stage for their continued pursuit of their first King of the Bluegrass tournament title since 1993.
