SAINT XAVIER 57, NORTH OLDHAM 47

Top-ranked Saint Xavier leaned on its defense, composure, and late execution to pull away from a stubborn North Oldham squad, earning a 57–47 victory Saturday night in the quarterfinals of the 2025 Gardner Law King of the Bluegrass.

The win marked Saint Xavier’s sixth straight KOB victory and sent the Tigers to the semifinals for the second consecutive season.

North Oldham came out with confidence and energy, racing to an 18–9 lead after the opening quarter behind crisp ball movement and perimeter shooting. Tommy Gregg fueled the early surge, knocking down multiple threes as the Mustangs seized control and put the Tigers on their heels.

Saint Xavier gradually steadied itself in the second quarter, chipping away at the deficit with defensive stops and second-chance opportunities. A late three just before halftime swung momentum, allowing the Tigers to slip into the break with a narrow 28–27 lead after trailing by as many as 13 points.

The third quarter belonged to Saint Xavier. The Tigers tightened defensively, limited North Oldham’s clean looks, and turned rebounds into transition chances. Jeremiah Jackson was at the center of the surge, finishing through contact and controlling the glass as Saint Xavier built a nine-point cushion entering the fourth.

North Oldham made one final push early in the final period, closing within four, but the Tigers answered every challenge. Jackson dominated the closing minutes, scoring inside, drawing fouls, and converting at the free-throw line to seal the outcome. Saint Xavier was perfect at the line in the final frame, shutting the door on any comeback hopes.

Jeremiah Jackson earned Central Bank Player of the Game honors after posting 17 points and 10 rebounds, delivering a physical and poised performance when it mattered most. Saint Xavier’s defense set the tone throughout, forcing turnovers and controlling the tempo in the second half.

Tommy Gregg led North Oldham with 15 points, providing steady offense throughout the night, but after a strong opening quarter the Mustangs struggled to maintain their rhythm as Saint Xavier’s pressure mounted.

With the win, Saint Xavier continues its march toward a second straight KOB title. The Tigers will face Madison Central at 7:30pm Sunday in the semifinals. North Oldham will face host Fairdale at 6:00pm Sunday in the 5th Place semifinals.

MADISON CENTRAL 82, FAIRDALE 76 (OT)

Madison Central had to survive every second of it — and then some.

No. 5 Madison Central (7-0) outlasted a fearless host Fairdale (3-3) in a heart-pounding overtime thriller, escaping with an 82-76 victory Saturday evening to punch its ticket to the semifinals of the Gardner Law King of the Bluegrass for the first time since 2012.

From the opening tip, Fairdale fed off the home crowd’s energy. Kamari Roberts put on an unforgettable performance, attacking the rim and knocking down shots from deep as the Bulldogs stormed to an early lead. Fairdale led 31-22 at halftime, and every possession felt like it carried postseason weight.

Madison Central answered with a surge that flipped the game on its head. Behind the physical presence of Jake Feldhaus, the Indians unleashed a blistering run in the third quarter, turning a deficit into momentum and suddenly seizing control. The pace intensified, bodies hit the floor, and the gym buzzed as the lead swung back and forth.

Just when it appeared Madison Central might escape in regulation, Roberts delivered the moment of the night — burying a clutch three-pointer with 8.6 seconds remaining in the game to tie the game at 66 and send the contest into overtime. The eruption inside Fairdale High School felt more like March than December.

In the extra period, Madison Central steadied itself as they jumped ahead 72-66 early. Feldhaus dominated the paint, muscling in key baskets and cleaning the glass, while the Indians calmly knocked down free throws to hold off every Fairdale charge. Feldhaus finished with 28 points and 10 rebounds, earning Central Bank Player of the Game honors in a performance that defined toughness and poise.

Roberts’ game-high 39 points kept the Bulldogs charging until the final horn, but Madison Central’s composure in overtime proved decisive.

MALE 77, COVINGTON CATHOLIC 69

Ninth ranked Male (6-1) delivered its most composed stretch of the night when it mattered most, dominating the final two minutes to pull away from No. 3 Covington Catholic (5-1) for a 77–69 victory Saturday afternoon at Fairdale High School in the Gardner Law King of the Bluegrass quarterfinals.

Locked in a tense, back-and-forth battle throughout the second half, Male turned a 67–66 edge into an eight-point win with a decisive closing run built on defense, rebounding, and poise. The Bulldogs scored on four of their final five possessions, repeatedly capitalizing on second-chance opportunities and Covington Catholic turnovers to seize full control in the closing moments.

Jordan Mitchell was the catalyst, earning Central Bank Player of the Game honors after posting 29 points, eight rebounds, and five assists. Mitchell delivered in every facet down the stretch—knocking down timely jumpers, securing critical defensive rebounds, and setting up teammates as Male closed the game with a 10–3 surge over the final 1:17.

Covington Catholic leaned heavily on Athens McGillis, who produced a game-high 35 points and kept the Colonels within striking distance with a series of tough finishes and trips to the foul line. McGillis tied the game at 60 with 5:27 remaining and later gave Covington Catholic a brief lead at 67–64 with just over three minutes to play. However, the Colonels went cold late, managing only two free throws in the final 90 seconds as Male’s pressure defense took over.

The Bulldogs’ balance proved decisive. Trey Hillerich controlled the glass with 11 rebounds, while Jaymes Clark and Keefe Braziel provided steady interior scoring and defensive toughness. Male out-rebounded Covington Catholic 48–34 overall and converted crucial second-chance points during its closing push.

After trailing by as many as 11 earlier in the contest, Male’s composure never wavered. A late putback by Mitchell and a pair of transition finishes off Colonels turnovers sealed the outcome and sent the Bulldogs into the semifinals for the first time since 2021.

NORTH LAUREL 67, LYON COUNTY 31

North Laurel (6-1) left little doubt Friday night, as the No. 6 Jaguars delivered a commanding 67-31 victory over No. 23 Lyon County (3-2) in Gardner Law King of the Bluegrass action at Fairdale High School

The Jaguars set the tone early with relentless defensive pressure, forcing turnovers and turning them into easy offense. North Laurel converted 15 Lyon County miscues into 16 points, a statistic that told much of the story in a game that quickly tilted out of reach. After building a 23-13 lead at the end of the first quarter, North Laurel steadily widened the margin behind efficient shooting and crisp ball movement.

Reece Davidson was the catalyst throughout, earning Central Bank Player of the Game honors with a game-high 22 points. Davidson scored from all three levels and helped spark several decisive runs, including a surge late in the second quarter that pushed the Jaguars to a 36-19 halftime advantage. North Laurel knocked down 12 three-pointers in the contest and shot better than 46 percent from the field, while holding Lyon County under 23 percent shooting overall.

The Jaguars put the game away in the third quarter, opening the half with a flurry that extended the lead past 20. A 14-2 run midway through the period highlighted North Laurel’s depth and defensive intensity, as Lyon County struggled to generate clean looks or second-chance opportunities.

Lyon County was led by Nolan Coffman, who scored nine points and battled on the glass, but the Lyons were unable to find an offensive rhythm against North Laurel’s pressure. Lyon County managed just three points in the fourth quarter as the Jaguars emptied the bench and cruised to the finish.

With the dominant win, North Laurel advances to the quarterfinals where they will play Frederick Douglass at 9:00pm Saturday. Lyon County will play Butler in the consolation bracket at 9:00pm Saturday.

FREDERICK DOUGLASS 61, BUTLER 58

In a game that delivered nonstop tension until the final horn, No. 24 Butler (5-1) saw the game slip away in heartbreaking fashion Friday night, falling 61–58 to No. 2 Frederick Douglass (4-0) in a gripping King of the Bluegrass showdown at Fairdale High School.

Butler played with confidence throughout, taking a 39–36 lead into halftime and later pushing the advantage to 52–49 heading into the fourth quarter. The Bears controlled tempo for much of the night and repeatedly answered Frederick Douglass’ runs, setting the stage for a dramatic finish.

That finish belonged to the Broncos.

With just over a minute remaining and Butler clinging to a one-point edge, DeMarcus Surratt stepped to the line and calmly knocked down two free throws to tie the game at 58–58. On the very next possession, Surratt attacked the lane and converted the go-ahead basket, giving Frederick Douglass its first lead of the closing stretch.

Butler had multiple chances to respond, but the Broncos’ defense held firm. Frederick Douglass then sealed the outcome at the free-throw line in the final seconds, extending the margin to 61–58 and forcing Butler into a last-second attempt to send the game to overtime.

The final shot wouldn’t fall, ending a contest that featured nine lead changes and eight ties and embodied everything the tournament is known for.

Surratt finished with a game-high 27 points and nine rebounds, earning Central Bank Player of the Game honors. Butler was led by Steven Tinsley and Adrian Wilder, who each scored 12 points, as the Bears battled until the final buzzer.

In the end, it was Frederick Douglass’ execution in the final minute that sent them to the quarterfinals where they will meet the winner of North Laurel vs. Lyon County at 9:00pm Saturday. Butler will take on the loser of North Laurel vs. Lyon County in the consolation bracket at 9:00pm Saturday.

COVINGTON CATHOLIC 95, LEE (AL) 50

Covington Catholic wasted little time asserting itself in opening-round play, rolling to a commanding 95-50 victory over Lee (Ala.) on Wednesday night at Fairdale High School.

The No. 3-ranked Colonels (5-0) set the tone early, racing out to a 29-15 lead after one quarter behind sharp ball movement and torrid perimeter shooting. Covington Catholic knocked down seven three-pointers in the first half alone and carried a 55-26 advantage into the locker room, firmly in control of the contest.

Athens McGillis delivered a standout performance to earn Central Bank Player of the Game honors, pouring in a game-high 32 points on 12-of-16 shooting, including six three-pointers. Braeden Myrick added 20 points, while Dylan Gaiser chipped in 11 as the Colonels finished the night with 13 triples and shot 65 percent from the field.

Covington Catholic continued to extend the margin after halftime, pushing the lead past 30 midway through the third quarter and emptying the bench late as the advantage swelled to as many as 48 points. The Colonels also controlled the glass and capitalized on Lee turnovers, turning defensive pressure into consistent transition opportunities.

Lee (7-3) was led by Dylan Anderson with 10 points, but the Generals struggled to keep pace against Covington Catholic’s depth and efficiency, shooting just 30.9 percent for the game. The Generals remain winless all-time in KOB action with their 7th straight defeat.

With the decisive win, the Colonels advance to the quarterfinals, where they will face Male at 4:30pm on Saturday. Lee will take on Greeneville at 4:30pm on Saturday in the consolation bracket.

MALE 71, GREENEVILLE (TN) 46

No. 9 Male opened its Gardner Law King of the Bluegrass tournament run in convincing fashion Friday afternoon, pulling away for a 71–46 victory over Greeneville (Tenn.) in a first-round matchup to advance to the quarterfinals and earn the 51st all-time KOB win in program history.

The Bulldogs (5–1) wasted little time establishing control, jumping out to a 24–14 lead after the opening quarter behind strong defensive pressure and efficient shot selection. Male continued to dictate the tempo in the second quarter, forcing turnovers and capitalizing in transition to build a 41–24 advantage at halftime.

Jordan Mitchell was named Central Bank Player of the Game after leading all scorers with 21 points, showcasing his ability to score at all three levels while also facilitating the offense and setting the tone defensively. Jaden Johnson added 19 points, repeatedly attacking the paint and finishing through contact as Male’s balanced attack kept Greeneville on its heels.

The third quarter proved decisive, as Male outscored the Green Devils 16–9 while pushing the lead beyond 20 points. The Bulldogs continued to apply pressure defensively, limiting second-chance opportunities and turning stops into easy scoring chances. Male extended the advantage to as many as 30 points before closing out the win.

Greeneville (0–10) was led by Yordan Mills, who scored 10 points, but the Green Devils struggled to generate consistent offense against Male’s length and physicality for much of the afternoon.

With the authoritative opening-round victory, Male moves on to the quarterfinals where they will play Covington Catholic on Saturday at 4:30pm. Greeneville will play Lee in the consolation bracket at 4:30pm on Saturday.

FAIRDALE 85, LARUE COUNTY 66

Host Fairdale opened the Gardner Law King of the Bluegrass with an impressive performance Thursday night, defeating LaRue County 85–66 to advance to the quarterfinals at Fairdale High School.

The Bulldogs set the tone early and never trailed, jumping out to a 21–11 lead after the first quarter and carrying a 39–33 advantage into halftime. Fairdale’s balance and efficiency were evident throughout, as the hosts shot better than 54 percent from the field and knocked down nine three-pointers while steadily extending the margin in the second half.

Jarel Butler delivered a composed and physical performance in the paint, earning Central Bank Player of the Game honors with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Butler was a constant presence on both ends, helping Fairdale control the glass and convert key second-chance opportunities as the Bulldogs pushed the lead to double digits in the third quarter.

Michael Harris kept LaRue County within striking distance for much of the night, pouring in a game-high 29 points for the Hawks. Harris connected from deep and attacked the rim, but Fairdale’s defensive pressure and timely scoring runs prevented LaRue County from mounting a serious comeback.

The Bulldogs took firm control after the break, outscoring LaRue County 22–16 in the third quarter and continuing to apply pressure in the fourth. A late surge stretched the lead to as many as 19 points before Fairdale closed out the win at the free-throw line and with a basket in the final seconds.

The victory marked Fairdale’s 58th all-time win in King of the Bluegrass history, moving the Bulldogs within five games of the tournament’s all-time victory record. With the win, the hosts move on to the quarterfinals where they will face Madison Central at 6:00pm on Saturday. LaRue County will face Trinity in the consolation bracket at 6:00pm on Saturday.
