CHAMPIONSHIP -- St. John's 59,Taylor County 56

In a battle of teams making their first King of the Bluegrass Championship appearance it was St. John's (7-2) who claimed the victory over Taylor County (10-1). The win was the Cadets first championship in the event and extended their winning streak to seven games. The game was an instant classic with the teams exchanging the lead twelve times including three lead changes and three ties in the final three minutes of play.

The opening quarter of the game was the Brandon Berry show as the Taylor County senior single-handedly outscored St. John's with 19 points including three 3-point field goals. The Cardinals 23-16 lead at the end of the first quarter didn't last long as Anthony Cowan capped an 8-0 run by St. John's put the Cadets ahead 24-23. An old fashion three-point play by Tre Wood put St. John's on top by four just minutes later. An administrative Technical Foul on St. John's with 1:46 to play put David Sloan at the free throw line where he tied the game at 31-31. Austin Webster put the Cardinals back in the leads with less than twenty seconds to play, but it was Jeffrey Dowtin's 3-pointer with three seconds to play that sent St. John's to the locker room with a 34-33 lead.

St. John's Matas Budrys opened the second half with a three-pointer to push the Cadets ahead by four and it took six straight points by Quentin Goodin to get Taylor County back in it midway through the third quarter. A putback by Brandon Berry gave the Cardinals their first lead of the half but it was short lived as Anthony Cowan drilled a three-pointer on the next possession to put St. John's back ahead. Ezra Oliver's basket with 2:24 remaining in the third quarter gave Taylor County a lead they would hold for nearly the next seven minutes. With 3:32 remaining in the game Jeffrey Dowtin got a block on one end of the floor and a basket on the other to put St. John's back in the lead 53-52. A pair of David Sloan free throws tied the game with 1:48 remaining and a third Sloan free throw put the Cards ahead 55-54 with 51.9 remaining in the game. A foul

on Goodin sent St. John's Cowan back to charity stripe where he hit a pair to put the Cadets ahead 56-55 with 6.1 seconds to play. A Tre Woods foul on the other end sent Sloan back to the free throw line where he hit the first-of-two shots to tie the game with 3.2 remaining. A miss and ensuing foul by Sloan put the Cadets' Dowtin on the line where he hit two free throws to put St. John's ahead 58-56. Anthony Cowan stole the ensuing inbound pass and sealed the St. John's 59-56 win with a final free throw.

Taylor County was led by Brandon Berry's 25 point, 11 rebound performance. All-Tournament Team selections Quentin Goodin and David Sloan added 16 points and 8 points respectively. Tounament Most Valuable Player Anthony Cowan Jr. notched 18 points for the Cadets and All-Tournament Team selection Jeffrey Dowtin added 12 points. 

3RD PLACE FINAL -- Doss 80, Christ Presbyterian 71

The 3rd Place Final paired Louisville's sixth region favorite and 10th ranked Doss (7-1) against two-time tournament champion Christ Presbyterian (9-3). It was all Christ Presbyterian in the fast paced opening quarter of play as Braxton Blackwell scored 10 first quarter points to lead CPA to a 28-21 lead. Doss then scored eleven unanswered points to push the Dragons ahead 32-28 just two minutes into the second quarter. The Dragons lead grew to as many as six points midway through the quarter before a late run by the Lions pulled the score even at 40-40 going into halftime. Doss had their foot on the gas early in the second half going on an 8-0 run. Tyger Cambell's layup at the buzzer pulled CPA back to within three points going into the final quarter. The Dragons slowly pulled away taking advantage of CPA turnovers to lead 70-63 midway through the final quarter. With three minutes remaining in the game CPA 8th grader Tyger Campbell went down to an injury with Doss leading 71-64 and the Lions never recovered. Doss held on to clinch the 80-71 victory for third place in the tournament. The win marked the third time the Dragons have finished Third Place in the King of the Bluegrass.

Doss had six players score in double digits Nick Anderson's 16 points led the way with Dajon McCarley adding 13 points, Dujuanta Weaver and Terell gray adding 12 points and Jaylon Hall and Ramon Collins scoring 10 points. Christ Presbyterian was led by University of Louisville target Braxton Blackwell with 27 points and 9 rebounds. Tyger Campbell added 17 points and Micah Davis added 15 points.

5TH PLACE FINAL -- Bullitt East 68, Wayne County 67 (OT)

In our second Top 25 match up of today's schedule 16th ranked Bullitt East (7-2) took on 7th ranked Wayne County (4-4). The game was an instant classic that saw the game tied up 7 times and saw the teams exchange the lead 10 times. A 7-2 run at the end of the first quarter pushed Wayne County ahead by five points at 22-17, their largest lead of the first half. Bullitt East fought back to within one point on four different occasions but couldn't take the lead as the Cardinals  took a 30-27 to the locker room. The third quarter saw the Wayne County lead grow to as many as 10 points. A pair of Jared Osborne free throws gave Bullitt East their first lead of the half with 6:05 remaining in the game. Brandon Klefot's basket in the final minute of play tied the game at 60-60. Wayne County's Jackson Baker missed an attempt at the buzzer to send the game to overtime. An early Bullitt East lead in overtime was negated by Peyton Woods field goal with 54 seconds remaining in play but it was the Chargers who claimed the victory with Bailey Rakes basket in the closing seconds. The win gave Bullitt East 5th place in the 2014 Forcht Bank King of the Bluegrass and marked the first time the Chargers have finished fifth in tournament history.

Peyton Woods led all scorers with 24 points to lead Wayne County. Junior Corey Stearns added a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds and Trey Blevins added 14 points. Bullitt East was led by Bailey Rakes 18 points, including the game winner, and 17 points by Tyler Sharpe and Jared Farris.

CONSOLATION FINAL -- Ballard 77, Newport Central Catholic 75

The Consolation Final was an unlikely place for the tournament's top ranked programs to meet but the game didn't disappoint those in attendance. It was No. 2 Ballard (8-2) that jumped out to an early 10-3 lead, but No. 4 Newport Central Catholic (5-2) had a strong second quarter to give the Thoroughbreds a 38-37 lead at the end of the first half. The Thoroughbreds lead grew in the second half with Newport Central Catholic leading by as many as 13 points with 7:10 remaining in play. Ballard outscored the Thoroughbreds 28-15 in the final seven minutes to 77-75 lead. The Bruins' Jalen Perry missed the second of two free throws to five Newport Central Catholic a chance but Ben Weyers three-pointer at the buzzer was short. The win marked the third time the Bruins have won the Consolation Final and moved Ballard two wins of Fairdale for the most wins in tournament history.

Newport Central Catholic has four players in double digits including Northern Kentucky signee Drew McDonald with 24 points and 10 rebounds, Ben Weyer with 18 points, Zah Pangallo with 15 points, and Luke Moeves with 14 points. Ballard's Jalen Perry led all scorers with 28 points and teammate Anthony Eaves added 26 for the Bruins.

2014 Championship Preview -- Taylor County vs. St. John's

Tonight's 2014 Forcht Bank King of the Bluegrass Championship will have some unique flair. The final game will feature undefeated Taylor County (10-0) against St. John's College High School (6-2) from Washington D.C. The game marks the first time since 2005 and just the thirteenth time in the 34 year history of the event that a Louisville school will not be in the KOB final.

The 17th ranked Cardinals defeated unranked Waggener, 7th ranked Wayne County and 10th ranked Doss in route the tournament final. Taylor County is averaging 82.0 points per game and is led by sophomore Quentin Goodin who is averaging 32.3 points and 9.3 rebounds per game.

The Cadets of St. John's come into the tournament final on a six game winning streak. St. John's has defeated the last two King of the Bluegrass Champions in route to the tournament final with wins over No. 2 Ballard, No. 16 Bullitt East, The Tennessean's Midstate No. 1 Christ Presbyterian Academy. The Cadets, ranked sixth by The Washington Post for the Washington D.C. area, are holding opponents to just 53.6 points per game. University of Louisville target Anthony Cowan Jr. leads the charge for St. John's averaging 22.6 points and more than 3 steals per game.

The overall edge based on tournament play goes to Taylor County who has the advantage in Scoring, Productivity, Accuracy, Range, Concentration, Strength and Alertness. The Cadets hold the pregame advantage in Defense, Aggressiveness and Ball Handling. The final will surely be memorable as we will crown a first time champion after tonight's game.
