TRINITY 70, COVINGTON CATHOLIC 60

Our first semifinal of the 2016 Forcht Bank King of the Bluegrass it was No. 2 Trinity (7-1) that used a strong second half to cruise past No.5 Covington Catholic (7-2). The opening four minutes of play was all Covington Catholic with the Colonels jumping out to a commanding 14-6 lead. It didn't take long for the Shamrocks to get going though as they quickly erased the deficit tying the game at 14-14 with 40 seconds remaining in the quarter. The Colonels took a 16-15 lead into the quarter break. The second quarter saw the Colonels open on a 10-5 run to push their lead back out to six points on three different occasions. It was a pair of late free throws by AJ Mayer that sent Covington Catholic to the locker room with a 35-27 lead at the half.

Trinity came out of halftime with a dominant performance that saw the Shamrocks tie the game jus three minutes into the quarter on a David Burton field goal. The Rocks hot start pushed them on a 20-2 run that put them ahead 47-39. A Justin Powell three-pointer at the buzzer sent Trinity into the final period with a 50-41 lead. The Colonels couldn't slow the Shamrocks momentum as the Trinity lead grew to 15 points on three different occasions. Covington Catholic reeled off a late 6-3 run but couldn't get any closer than 9 points. Trinity advanced to their second straight King of the Bluegrass title game with the 70-60 victory.

Trinity was led by sophomore David Burton's 21 points. Lukas Berkman added 18 points and Jayden Scrubb added 10 points. Covington Catholic was led by senior Cole VonHandorf with 21 points and the duo of CJ Fredrick and AJ Mayer added 19 and 13 points respectively.
