North Oldham 63, Sagemont (FL) 69

In our opening quarterfinal of the 2022 Gardner Law King of the Bluegrass it was the Lions of Sagemont (FL) that got off to a hot start surging ahead 9-2 in the first three minutes of play. Luke Anderson would get North Oldham as close as five points following a basket with three minutes to play in the opening quarter. Cameron Gibson's layup less than a minute later capped a 5-0 run for Sagemont to put them back firmly in control. North Oldham would cut the lead to 9-16 going into the quarter break. Gibson and Ashton Smith would combine for seven early points in the second quarter as the Lions went on a 7-2 to extend their lead to 23-11. A Jack Scales dunk with 5:24 remaining in the half pulled the Mustangs back within 8 points at 15-23. Sagemont would see their lead grow to as many as 12 points midway through the quarter, but they could close the door on North Oldham. It was a 13-5 run by the Mustangs entering the half to trim the Sagemont lead to just four points at 28-32.

Sagemont struck first in the second half with a basket by Ashton Smith before North Oldham reeled off a 9-0 run taking the lead on Grant Neal basket two minutes into the second half. The Lions kept their composure and took the lead back following a Danielius Kasparas basket with three minutes remaining in the quarter. North Oldham had too much momentum though as they finished the quarter with a 5-0 to lead 47-43 going into the final quarter. Jack Scales opened the final quarter with a three-pointer to extend North Oldham's lead to 7 points. The Mustangs found themselves firmly in control following an Ian Higdon free throw with 5:33 remaining in the game leading 60-48. Sagemont connected on three-straight three-pointers as part of a 9-1 run to pull themselves back into the game trailing 63-67 with 2:05 remaining in play. Dallas Roberts hit a pair of free throws for North Oldham to push their lead to 72-66 with 42 seconds remaining in play. Devontae Jean would nail a three-pointer on the next possession for Sagemont to pull them within three points, but the Lions ran out of time falling 73-69. 

North Oldham's Jack Scales was named Central Bank Player of the Game with a game-high 26 points. Ian Higdon added 16 points and 20 rebounds for the Mustangs. Sagemont was led by Ashton Smith with 15 points and Cameron Gibson with 13 points. 

North Oldham advances to Monday's semifinals to play the winner of Warren Central vs. DuPont Manual at 9:00pm. Sagemont will take on the loser of Warren Central vs. DuPont Manual at 4:30pm on Monday in the consolation bracket.
