The opening game of the 2017 Chad Gardner Law King of the Bluegrass Holiday Classic saw Ballard, a three-time King of the Bluegrass Champion, run away with a 75-62 victory over 19th ranked Walton-Verona. Walton-Verona held tough with the 5th ranked Bruins through the first half of play with Ballard taking a slim 38-30 lead into the locker room. A 22-3 run at end of the third quarter of play pushed the Bruins lead to 64-37 entering the final quarter. Ballard would extend their lead to as many as 28 points before a late run by Walton Verona pulled the Bearcats within the final margin at 75-62. Ballard's Marshon Ford led the Bruins with a game-high 14 points.
